INTRODUCTION

IRPC Public Company Limited has the intention and commitment to participate in creating the benefits to elevate the quality of life of people in the communities and society sustainably. We are also aware of the importance of the disabled people as group of people who value the country’s development but are often overlooked and not socially acceptable. Most disabled people are neglected and have no occupation. Thus, if the unemployment problem of the disabled people is solved, the disabled people and their families will have better quality of life by creating the income leading to self-reliance. This will create pride and dignity as well as being the role model for other disabled people to have self-improvement and to have the career that suits themselves. This can also reduce the burden of the society and the government in using the resources and budgets to care for the unemployed disabled people further.

FRAMEWORK AND STRATEGY

The Smile Farm for Chance is the Project that IRPC has implemented for assisting people with disabilities who are inferior in the society to have knowledge in the agriculture, have career, and have income sustainably. Such project is for promoting the learning and training the profession for the disabled people following the “Sufficiency Economy” program from the royal thought of King Bhumibol Adulyadej. It is the idea based on the foundation of Thai culture and based on the middle way and the prudence with the consideration on the sufficiency, reasonability, creation of self-immunity as well as using the knowledge and morality as the foundation in living. Apart from the opportunities in learning and having professional training, the important benefits gained from this project is the smile, laughter, happiness, and encouragement that everyone has for one another.

Moreover, the Project is set with the objectives apart from the development and elevation of quality of life of the disabled people to respond and achieve the goal of sustainable development in Clause 1. No Poverty; to remove poverty in all forms and all places, and Clause 2. Zero Hunger; to remove the hunger, achieve the food stability, and promote sustainable agriculture.

The Smile Farm for Chance Project was started in operation in June 2017 in the area of Udon Thani Sankamonthon Center of Promotion and Development on People with Disabilities, located in Northeastern Thailand with the area of 270 rai. After finishing the area preparation, the training was started on the people with disabilities and the caregivers of disabled people in agricultural and animal husbandry appropriately for their physical condition and abilities both theoretically and practically for 600 hours. After having passed the training, the 26 disabled people and caregivers were employed to work on the project further.

ACHIEVEMENT AND IMPACT

  • People with disabilities can gain knowledge and be trained on agriculture variously which can be applied in daily life and can be transmitted to family members.
  • People with disabilities can create income and career for themselves and their families. The disabled people participating in the project will receive the allowance during training and when starting to work, they will be paid with the daily wage of 300 baht per day as well as receiving the profit sharing from the sales on monthly basis.
  • The disabled people can have career. They can also live with families in the area, environment, or surroundings familiar to them.
  • People with disabilities can do the activities together or set up the career group to generate income for themselves and their families sustainably.
  • The disabled people will have better mental state, be proud, and self-valued because of the opportunity and acceptance gained from the society. They can generate career and benefits for themselves and their families.
  • The caregivers of the disabled people can get a chance to work, earn money for themselves and their families as the disabled people who cannot do the occupation can be brought to work altogether.

FUTURE DIRECTION

After the Project was successfully finished and for the Project to be implemented efficiently and sustainably, IRPC plans to improve and develop the areas to have sustainable efficiency in the production. The Company has stipulated the plan in using the knowledge both from the Company and from the personnel to be applied for the maximum benefits.
