Financial Literacy for Youth Courses, Upturning Disadvantaged Students’ Lives

INTRODUCTION

The Company initiates and promotes the Financial Literacy for Youth (FLY) project which they Company provides free financial education for trainees and guides students to obtain financial licenses to strengthen their employment chances. The Company realises that they best way to upturn the lives of disadvantaged students by improving their knowledge, for them to obtain better jobs and to increase their overall household income. However, most disadvantaged students have to sacrifice study time in order to work part-time for tuition fees which results in obtaining unfavourable grades for their progression. With that in mind, in 2015, the Company initiated the FLY project, with the goal providing financial related courses to senior students in need. Not only that, the project also provides living allowances, license examination fees, lunches, books and handouts in order for students to make a living while learning simultaneously. Lastly, the final stage of the project is to match fresh graduates with a stable job in the financial industry.

FRAMEWORK AND STRATEGY

The Company provides a series of systematic financial related courses to enhance students’ skills, followed by a tutoring session for their progression. Upon completion of the course, job matching will be provided to help students obtain job offers and the goal of obtaining a job within the financial industry is to upturn the students’ lives for the better with a stable income and this project cultivates talents for the financial sector and enterprises. Ultimately, FLY is an important project to realise the Company’s strategies in the establishment of a diversified financial market hub in developing financial inclusion related services and contributing to the improvement of Competent Authority’s supervision efficiency and the Company will put their available abilities and resources in order to make FLY a successful project.

ACHIEVEMENT AND IMPACT

From 2015 to 2020, more than 2,000 students have successfully completed the FLY project and over 10,000 professional financial certification was obtained by the students. To add on to that, In 2019, over 98% of FLY students passed the Financial Markets and Professional Ethics Test while over 60% passed the Securities Specialist Test and Proficiency Test for Trust Operations Personnel. Additionally, nearly 85% active job-seeking FLY students was admitted into famous financial institutions in which 20 of the students received job offers in government banks.

FUTURE DIRECTION

The main goal of the FLY project is to upturn the lives of those students in need and the Company will continue to optimise the mechanisms to motivate students to pursue better careers and cultivate talents for the financial market. For the 2020 - 2021 school year, the Company will increase the living allowances of students to reduce their burden in order for them to pay more attention to the FLY project. Additionally, the Company will set stricter standards for students who are interested in joining to reallocate resources to those in need. The Company will follow the financial technology and adjust their plans and strategies in a rolling basis to achieve the goals of FLY.
As a Financial Market Infrastructure (FMI), Taiwan Depository & Clearing Corporation (TDCC) offers dematerialised registration, central securities depositories, book-entry transfer and settlement mechanism for diversified financial products such as equities, fixed-income securities, futures, mutual funds and other value-added services.
