LOVE & ARTS for Dreams Initiatives Project

CTBC Foundation For Arts And Culture

INTRODUCTION

Children in remote areas are not only suffering from financial deprivation, but also dream deprivation and the Love & Arts for Dreams Initiatives brings artistic mentors from various fields to remote areas to strengthen art education. This is not just about art education, but also life education. This project aims to implement the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of quality education and reduced inequality. In 2018, the project was launched in Donghe Elementary School, Taitung with Bulareyaung Pagarlava, a world-famous Paiwan choreographer. They provided dance lessons to tribal children to become brave dream chasers and this project became an example for the national art education. A project partnership with the Puppet & Its Double to visit King Young Elementary School in Yilan was formed to conduct an indepth puppetry course. Children of the tribal village learned how to make and handle puppets while also performing at the charity session of the CTBC Arts Festival, which is not only the representative business of the Foundation but also a unique Arts Festival in Taiwan.

FRAMEWORK AND STRATEGY

This project was the first to create the Love & Arts for Dreams Formula, which aims to utilise educational resources from the government and call out to private corporations and community volunteers through Dreamers School and artistic mentors. The project gathered the strength of many to build platforms for students to pursue their dreams in rural areas and gradually expanded its impact. The Foundation connected several arts and cultural projects, established a database of artistic mentors, engaged in arts and cultural education in rural areas with like-minded artists, and further gathered resources of the CTBC Group to build diverse platforms for rural children to gain more experience with formal performances and build their confidence. Moreover, The Foundation takes the stories of the dream chasers and compiles them into a documentary in order to boost and expand influence and to resonate with the general public to maximise the influence.

ACHIEVEMENT AND IMPACT

The Love & Arts for Dreams Initiatives adopted the social return on investment (SROI) approach. The project identifies the needs of children living in remote areas and partners with artistic mentors to build a “formal performance stage” and this gives children an opportunity to perform and express themselves, allowing them to take the learning process seriously and to build on their confidence. This project has had a lasting influence of more than 2 years and according to statistics, 80% of students who enrolled in this project have established positive values, improved their interpersonal relationships and reinforced their self identity.

FUTURE DIRECTION

Over the past three years, the Love & Arts for Dreams Initiatives has covered the entirety of eastern Taiwan, where arts and cultural resources are the most lacking. The Initiatives received 17 awards at domestically and abroad and will gradually expand to 22 counties and cities throughout Taiwan in the future. The Foundation will continue to integrate resources at home and abroad to build diverse stages, help Dreamers to develop unique artistic education, call upon the local enterprises, and deepen artistic education and resources in local communities. The Foundation will also invite governments to create equal and high-quality arts and cultural experiences, and expand the depth, scope, and continuity of arts and cultural education in rural areas through education policies.
The CTBC Foundation for Arts and Culture upholds the philosophy of “Learning through Art, Nurturing Creativity through Culture”. CTBC organised various activities such as the Love & Arts for Dreams Initiatives, CTBC Arts Festival, The Master Class Series, Indie Bands and Alternative Platforms, and CTBC Arts Award.
