Carbon & Water Management
PT HM Sampoerna
INTRODUCTION
Sampoerna is strongly committed to operate with integrity and focus to deliver long-term and sustainable growth by reducing environmental footprint. Effective environmental management across its operations and value chain goes beyond compliance with applicable laws and regulations. It is central to help the Company to minimise environmental impacts and address climate change. It strives to minimise carbon footprints in the value chain, manage water, and conserve biodiversity wherever the Company’s facilities are located. Global warming is a global environmental issue, which also refers to as climate change, it affects earth in rising sea levels, extreme weather, ocean acidification, species extinctions, and many other massive destruction. One of the major causes is burning fossil fuels, which increased atmospheric carbon dioxide levels, and leading to global warming. Also, the Company implemented Alliance for Water Stewardship Standard in Sukorejo Plant, and this effort marked their journey as the first Alliance Water Stewardship (“AWS”) certified plant/company in Indonesia for being able to maintain water conservation.FRAMEWORK AND STRATEGY
is product transportation and distribution. It delivers the product from the manufacturing plant to their warehouses and 114 locations of zone branch offices, sales offices and distribution center all over Indonesia. It has three modes of transportations: vessel, truck, and train. To reduce its carbon footprint, the Company conducted a study to identify the most effective transportation type, route & how to pack its goods in order to reduce carbon emission. As for water management & treatment, Sampoerna realised that the scarcity of clean water is the responsibility of its users, both industry players and the community at large, thus maintaining its water efficiency usage and maintain watersheds in its production facilities. That commitment was poured into an effort to conduct supervision and evaluation of production facilities, water catchments, and AWS systems.ACHIEVEMENT AND IMPACT
The Company successfully reduced their carbon footprint by 13.5% from 2016 to 2019. It was a great achievement for the Company and this initiative was sustained since 2016, and the number of carbon footprint positively decreased year by year. For the water management part, The AWS Standard 1.0 itself is designed to achieve four water service objectives, namely good water management, sustainable water availability, good water quality, and important water related health areas. AWS certification standards focus on creating mutual benefits with other parties in the catchment, including how water management can be realised collectively to improve health in the catchment. This programme involves all stakeholders in the catchment area to efficiently use water and maintain the surrounding area. Sampoerna has a commitment to continue implementing water efficiency in all of its production facilities.FUTURE DIRECTION
Sampoerna will continue doing this initiative and at the same time, also looking for the opportunity to reduce its carbon footprint and to improve its water management in more innovative way or collaboration with other companies.
