INTRODUCTION

Climate change is a highly concerned global topic. According to the published research report by the Global Carbon Project of an international scientific organisation, global carbon dioxide emissions are hitting record highs year by year. The Company is deeply rooted in the local society of Taiwan for over long periods of time providing its customers rapid and convenient services by combining its core insurance capability to promote corporate social responsibility. Through its insurance agents across Taiwan and digital finance technology, it aims to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions released during the course of its services. Thus, Nan Shan Life became the first insurance enterprise in the world to have obtained double carbon footprint certifications in response to mitigating high risk from global climate change and making efforts to join in the contribution of protecting the earth.

FRAMEWORK AND STRATEGY

Policy service is the key core process of insurance. The Company conducted a carbon inventory of the environmental impacts resulting from its policy service processes. Its policy carbon footprint project consists of the following three phases.
1. Using innovative blockchain service to lower the carbon dioxide emissions of traditional insurance service.
2. The first to adopt ISO 14067 services carbon footprint standard inventory for the environmental impacts of the Company’s policy service processes, formulated the world’s first policy carbon footprint industry standard, and became the first insurance enterprise in Taiwan to have obtained the carbon labeling certificate issued by the Taiwan Environmental Protection Administration and ISO 14067 verification.
3. Promoting corporate energy savings and environmental education, continue in realising environmental sustainable development actions.

ACHIEVEMENT AND IMPACT

The Company is one of the few insurance enterprises that signed onto the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures in 2018. Not only that, Nan Shan Life is also the first to obtain verification declaration from SGS Taiwan for ISO 14067 International Standard for Carbon Footprint while also responding to the government’s product carbon labelling policy, formulated the first “Life Insurance Service – CFP-PCR” in Taiwan in 2019. Additionally, rigorous inventory shows that the average carbon footprint for each life insurance services stands at 8 kg. Subsequently, effectively combining company policies and energy and waste reduction to realise sustainable environment commitments, serving as a basis for industry peers in calculating carbon footprints for their life insurance service, developing industry influence.

FUTURE DIRECTION

In fulfillment of green insurance and low carbon service commitments, the Company developed its core capability in digital finance to create a green building of international standard while combining digital technology to promote various carbon reduction measures. Through its e-operations, jointly used by its policyholders and insurance agents to reduce the use of paper receipts, purchasing of renewable energy carbon credit in Taiwan to reduce the energy wastage of its insurance documents, and by organising events such as coastal cleanup, tree planting, and reducing plastic wastage. The Company will continue to promote environment sustainable actions. Thus, Nan Shan Life acts as a major force in the promotion of environmental sustainable development in Taiwan.
