The 1st Certified Green Factory with Comprehensive Food Traceability System in Taiwan

INTRODUCTION

To respond to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the material issues in the food industry, including global climate change, energy conservation and carbon reduction, environmental protection, and food safety, the Company hopes to achieve the following goals through green factory and building a food production traceability system. The goal is to achieve environmental protection, energy conservation and carbon reduction in practice and less the environmental impacts from food production, enhance energy efficiency, reducing cost and carbon footprints.

FRAMEWORK AND STRATEGY

The Company established green transformation strategies in the food industry through utilising green production processes and energy management mechanisms to reduce environmental impacts from food production, becoming the first certified green factory in the food industry in Taiwan. Also, the Company rigorously controls food safety through quality management and implemented traceable agricultural product (TAP) and processed food traceability systems, which also allows consumers to understand the food production process from farm to table. Additionally, the Company has also implemented a series of employee training, participated in government projects, establishing green production management system, introduced clean production technologies, and built a product traceability system in line with government policy. The Company became a benchmark of sustainable food production, and they shared their experiences with other enterprises and government agencies through hosting green factory visits.

ACHIEVEMENT AND IMPACT

The TAP has accumulated a sales of NT$91.62 million and has impacted over 2.45 million people and there are currently 8 food traceable items. To add on to that, TAP has enhanced transparency in overall production processes, food safety and increasing confidence of consumers with anti-counterfeit labels while also effectively monitoring potential food safety problems while establishing partnerships across the value chain for food traceability, strengthening quality control and effectiveness in logistics. The green factory saw an increase in total energy savings which amounted to 832,283 kWh and reduced 442.8 tons of carbon emissions. In comparison with 2016, power consumption was reduced by 8.5% and total carbon emissions were reduced by 8.2% in 2019. To add on to that, the Company installed a renewable solar energy power system which accumulated 687,031 kWh from 2018 to 2019, reducing approximately 365.5 tons of carbon emissions.

FUTURE DIRECTION

The Company will continue to uphold sustainable development strategies, by practicing and promoting green production and food traceability system, which includes evaluating product carbon and water footprint, building energy management system (EMS) to fully digitise energy management and to introduce smart production systems for industry upgrades and innovations and lastly to increase the number of traceable food product items.
