INTRODUCTION
Asia Cement’s circular economy project transforms the original cradle-to-grave way of treating waste to a cradle-tocradle endless succession way of resource cycling model through the integration of “arterial industry” and “veinous industry”. This project enables Asia Cement Corporation to reduce the consumption of natural resources and the emission of greenhouse gas by recycling and reusing wastes and recyclable products, and in the meanwhile, it creates more job opportunities. The goal and mission of this project are to align with United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which focuses on sustainable consumption and production mode and achieving efficient use of natural resources and sustainable management. It also solves the government and many industries’ dilemma in handling waste disposal by converting waste into effective resources in the cement production process.
FRAMEWORK AND STRATEGY
In the execution of the project, the Company has formed a circular economy management team by integrating both internal and external expertise including legal, manufacturing process technology and pollution prevention. The core value of circular economy is the reuse of waste materials, the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, and the creation of new values for the cement industry. The unique production feature of cement plants entitles them to be a pioneer in Taiwan’s circular economy development path. Asia Cement Cooperation utilises it’s core facility, cement kiln, to treat recycled waste from all over Taiwan and produce cement for infrastructures and national defense, achieving significant waste deduction and sustainable resources benefits.ACHIEVEMENT AND IMPACT
In 2019, the Company reduced a total of 148,000 tons of waste while also reducing 23,700 tons of CO2 emissions and 14,000 tons of water usage in the process of mining, handling and transportation of raw materials, creating a 100 million NTD economic benefit. This increased employment opportunities and reduced social and environmental costs in the extraction of natural resources which brings positive impact on the community and response to the sustainable management expectations from customers and shareholders.FUTURE DIRECTION
The future plans of the Company is to continue to explore and innovate new technologies to exploit various recycled materials and furthermore, focus on more sustainable management projects in CSR. The 2030 circular economy goal is to recycle 1.4 million tons of waste to substitute raw materials and fuels per year. It is estimated to reduce 238,000 tons of greenhouse gas emission and 135,000 tons of water usage and create economic benefits for more than 950 million NTD yearly.
