INTRODUCTION

The main aim of the project is to reduce and managed waste from the communities surround JAPFA business unit premises. To achieved this goal, JAPFA created waste bank as strategies that integrate economic/income generating activities with the environment management issues. This integrations approach is able to change paradigm within the communities that waste also has value. Therefore, waste must be well managed in order to increase their income. Through the creation of the waste bank, this initiative is acceptable within the community since effort to converse environment is in line with economic activities.

To ensure its sustainability, JAPFA is create communitybased organisation to run the initiatives. This organization is tangled with the village authority in the premises. This approach is use to ensuring further support and collaboration with village authority and the government officials. Moreover, the economic approach of the initiatives also important part of strategy to ensure its sustainability. The approach will ensure initiatives will continue and self-financed in the future.

FRAMEWORK AND STRATEGY

The project was initiated near JAPFA Feed Factory at Sragen District. It started with the creation of community based organisation to handle of waste management issues at the project premises. The first part of this activities is strengthening community integration by creating the community-based organisation that designated to manage waste management issues. Second phase of the activities is increasing its capacities to manage waste in their surrounding neighborhoods. The thirds phase is educating community to managing waste by separating inorganic and organic waste. The waste bank will collect the inorganic waste from the community and sell it to recycled stuff buyer. The community member who are send their inorganic waste to the waste bank will have saving (money) based on the value of the inorganic waste that are collected. This method that integrate community resilience approach with the business models is able to increase initiatives sustainability.

ACHIEVEMENT AND IMPACT

During initial eight months programme, the waste bank able to reduce inorganic waste from three sub-village as much as 17 tons and able to increase community saving up to 20 million rupiah (1,800 US$). Those number are increasing in line with the increasing beneficiaries.

FUTURE DIRECTION

In the 2019, JAPFA SiRepi Waste Bank will focus on managing organic waste and increasing its beneficiaries. Moreover, in JAPFA’s point view, this model will be replicated in the other premises with some modifications with the aim of increasing waste reductions initiatives.
