INTRODUCTION
Sports Development is one of the four key pillars focused on by NagaWorld’s CSR initiatives. The Football Development Programme in Kampong Speu is a sustainable initiative which stands to benefit over 18,500 students and teachers. Main objective is to develop promising talents into professional football players for the Cambodian national team.NagaWorld believes that participation in sports helps develop character, fosters teamwork, builds leadership skills and revitalises youths and the underprivileged in a sustainable way for the betterment of Cambodia. The Company aims to nurture a healthier and more well-balanced generation of young people who are able to help contribute back to Cambodia in their adult years, thereby enriching the nation.
In 2018, NagaWorld launched their 2-year Football Development Programme in Kampong Speu in collaboration with the Football Federation of Cambodia, the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport and the Union of Youth Federations of Cambodia.
FRAMEWORK AND STRATEGY
Under the programme, a total of 120 sports teachers were trained in professional coaching techniques by NagaWorld FC, the reigning Metfone C-League champions. Upon completion of the four days course, all teachers received an official D-Licence (grassroots) coaching certificate issued by the Football Federation of Cambodia. The course ensures that all teachers are able to conduct proper training sessions teaching correct football techniques at schools and in local communities.In January 2019, NagaWorld organised an U18 Football Mini Tournament with more than 600 students participating and showcasing their newly learnt skills over four days, as well as improving their game-time confidence. Nine exceptional players were selected to receive additional training with NagaWorld FC coaches. Since inception in 1995, NagaWorld has continually contributed to society, conducted charity work and helped in nation building, which is synonymous with the way the company carries out its business in Cambodia.
ACHIEVEMENT AND IMPACT
NagaWorld Kind Hearts’ football coaching of 120 sports teachers in the Kampong Speu province stands to benefit more than 18,500 students. The Company’s efforts in providing a skills training platform for these sports teachers to become proficient football coaches with an eye for talent is a sustainable method to support football development in Cambodia.So far, nine gifted students have been selected for training with NagaWorld FC coaches, while one new player from Kampong Speu province has joined the professional team. Armed with these new coaching skills, the teachers will in turn be able to train and develop the next generation of football players. It is NagaWorld’s hope that this programme will help discover and nurture outstanding football players from Kampong Speu in years to come, producing professional players to star in the Cambodian national team in due course.
FUTURE DIRECTION
Through NagaWorld’s pioneering two-year initiative, the standard of grassroots football coaching at schools across Kampong Speu province is set to improve considerably. Upgrading the level of coaches from D-License to C-License will allow for further enhancements of football training at schools. Teachers must conduct progress reports every quarter, noting details such as turnout of students at trainings, results of matches and tournaments, and identifying any promising young players.The U18 Football Mini Tournaments will serve as a way to monitor the performance of players listed as promising by their teachers, and to help increase the students’ game-time confidence.
NagaWorld FC will then select any exceptional talents to receive additional training with professional coaches from NagaWorld FC. These players are then poised to be offered professional contracts with the first team once they turn 18 years of age.
