The main objective of the Sports For All programme is to instil a healthy lifestyle, promote sports culture and to unearth new talents among the underprivileged society which include youths, students, indigenous people, special needs children, orphans, disabled people as well as senior citizens.
INTRODUCTION
As a responsible corporate entity, Perangsang Selangor continue to prioritise social community engagement through four (4) main Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) pillars namely the Selangor Sports Stimulus, Selangor People Career Stimulus, Selangor Community Responsibility Stimulus and Selangor Entrepreneurship Stimulus programme. Since its inception in 2011, Perangsang Selangor spent more than USD7.98 million across all CSR programmes involving 38,352 beneficiaries among the local communities especially in Selangor.For the year 2017, Perangsang Selangor conducted a total of 90 ‘Sports For All’ activities under the Selangor Sports Stimulus initiative across 9 districts in Selangor involving eight (8) sports disciplines such as swimming, badminton, bowling, cycling, archery, football, squash and sepak takraw. In addition, Perangsang Selangor emerged as the main sponsor for two (2) major youth football championships, the Raja Muda of Selangor’s Cup (U-12) and the Dato’ Mokhtar Dahari Cup (U-18) with total participation of 1,882 young football athletes.
The main objective of the ‘Sports For All’ programme is to instil a healthy lifestyle, promote sports culture and to unearth new talents among the underprivileged society which include youths, students, indigenous people, special needs children, orphans, disabled people as well as senior citizens. The sports clinics were conducted under the guidance of former national athletes and professional coaches who provided hands-on training to increase participants’ basic skills, knowledge, motivation and encourage sports development from grassroot level.
FRAMEWORK AND STRATEGY
The Selangor Sports Stimulus programme was initiated in year 2014 with the aim to develop sports athletes and establish elite teams to represent the state and country in local and international championships. A total of USD1.27 million worth of funds were spent in five (5) major sports which include swimming, badminton, cycling, bowling and football involving 17,626 participants in the state of Selangor. Through the programme, a total of 257 gold medals have been achieved among 158 athletes in various tournaments between 2014 and 2015.In 2016, Perangsang Selangor shifted its focus towards stimulating the ‘Sports For All’ programme with the addition of three (3) new sports such as squash, sepak takraw and archery to contribute and engage the community at large by inculcating a healthy lifestyle as well as encouraging sports education and development among youths in Selangor.
In 2017, Perangsang Selangor spent USD412,500 for the implementation of ‘Sports For All’ programme which consists of sports clinics, workshops, safety awareness campaigns and competitions.
ACHIEVEMENT AND IMPACT
For the year of 2017, Perangsang Selangor enhanced the quality of life among the rural society across Selangor by providing knowledge in sports, opportunities to experience and enjoy the power of sports as well as producing potential champions for the state or country from grassroot level through the ‘Sports For All’ programme.A total of 10,153 participants were involved in the programme with 90 events implemented throughout the state. The programmes received tremendous and encouraging response from the society with 174 newly identified talents being groomed to represent schools, clubs, sports associations, districts, states and national team in various categories.
Through our CSR initiatives, Perangsang Selangor gained due recognition via the conferment of “Social Empowerment Awards” in the Asia Responsible Awards – South East Asia (2013) and Asia (2015) and being shortlisted among the top 10 in Asia for the “Best Sports CSR Initiative of the Year” in the Asia’s Sports Industry Award SPIA ASIA 2017. Perangsang Selangor was also named winner of the Jury Award 2017 by the Selangor Sports Council.
FUTURE DIRECTION
Ultimately, the Selangor Sports Stimulus programme has evolved from primarily targeting marginalised talent to a wider scope benefiting people from all walks of life including the underprivileged and disabled society by providing a platform to inculcate a healthier lifestyle through sports ‘therapy’ clinics whilst identifying new talents. Perangsang Selangor will continue to focus on similar approach and provide material supports through its community engagements initiatives aligned with its mission to ensure quality of life by being a caring, community-oriented and environmental friendly organisation.
