”January of 2017, Chairman Chou was invited to Beijing to address China’s largest real estate group, China Urban Realty Association, with the subject “A Social Experiment to Influence 300 Million People” in sharing the experience of corporate social responsibility with great reception.“

INTRODUCTION

In 1981, the Company was founded at a time when the real estate market in Taiwan had lacked the dedicated arbitration system and regulations to oversee the real estate transactions. Fierce competition in the industry had viciously destabilized the society to result in deeper financial issues among the general public.

The Company had therefore established several industry leading standards to respond to the needs of stakeholders since its founding. Since then, the industry followed suit and the government laid down the pertinent legislations based on the Company’s track records to gradually put the real estate industry of Taiwan back on track.

However, the corporate winds turned and companies started to pursue profits by ignoring their moral responsibilities towards society. News of food safety, the financial scandals, and falsifying emission data by automobile makers etc. are still fresh on our minds to this day – showing that the influence of a single corporation is still very limited. Thus, the Company extracted the essence of business management from the wisdom of Confucian to communicate, through a variety of channels, with the masses and promote the ethical practice for social harmony to give back to the society.

FRAMEWORK AND STRATEGY

Promotion of ethics is a long-term project and the Company understands that it must start out from education in the schools to then build trust in the community with social participation and learning for enhancing the ethical responsibilities of Taiwan.

To expand the scope of the programs so that the public and opinion leaders could experience the application of Confucianism in everyday life, the “Sinyi School” was established in 2012 for the participation of the community. Chou Chun-Chi, Chairman of the Company, not only offered to share his experience alongside his travels, but he would also publish articles through newspapers, magazines, and online media to personally detail the valuable process of practicing the social responsibilities as a business. With his own words, he could start to promote the philosophy of ethics for a sustainable society with peace and harmony.

ACHIEVEMENT AND IMPACT

Although Confucianism has been passed down with a history of more than a thousand years, few companies have attempted to give it a modern new meaning. Sinyi Chairman Chou Chun-Chi is one of the few corporate leaders to be able to systematically implement the Confucian doctrine into business management, and for this, he has received high acclaim from the community. In 2013, Chairman Chou was awarded with Frobes’ “Asia Heroes of Philanthropy” for his “long-term and in-depth contribution to education to have successfully promoted ethics education and laid down a foundation for good corporate practices.”

The various programs aimed at promoting business ethics in Taiwan have already brought forth the society of Taiwan a variety of fruitful results:

FUTURE DIRECTION

Sustainability is the primary focus of business ethics promotion as shown with the following plans:

“Vertical Integration of Knowhow” – Expand the scope of the teaching program for business ethics to junior high and high school students and use current affairs to raise ethical awareness in the public.

“Training Teachers of Ethics Education” – Establish the business ethics teacher certification system and plan for the seed teachers to help schools in setting up for their own business ethics teaching position. Invite international business ethics teachers to energize the ethics teaching community in Taiwan.

“Exchange of Ethical Practices” – Connect with Taiwanese corporations to host the ethics symposium for sharing of good practices within the industry from personal experience and offer suggestions to implement the values of business ethics.

“Business Ethics in Taiwan” – Reinforce the importance of trust and ethics for the goal of sustainability in Taiwan so that business ethics can become synonymous with the industry of Taiwan.
