Million Bricks For A Happy Life

With the success of the “Million bricks for a happy life” project, Dai-ichi Life Vietnam was the only life insurance company in Asia to honourably win “Corporate Social Responsibility Award” at the Asia Insurance Industry Awards 2015, organized by Asia Insurance Review Magazine.

INTRODUCTION

Makeshift bridges have posed many threats and dangers to the river/canal crossing of residents in many rural localities of Vietnam. Realizing the real need of replacing these poorly-made bridges by the concrete ones to ensure safer and more convenient daily traveling, especially for children, in July 2014, Dai-ichi Life Vietnam launched the meaningful program “Million bricks for a happy life”, funding the construction of 10 concrete bridges in disadvantaged areas of 10 provinces in Vietnam.

Infused by its corporate vision of “Thinking People First”, the “Million bricks for a happy life” project highlights Dai-ichi Life Vietnam’s well-established tradition of caring for and giving back to the community where it does business. Proudly becoming the rst and only life insurance provider in the industry to initiate this bridge building program, Dai-ichi Life Vietnam is committed to the fulllment of its corporate social responsibility by improving the quality of life for Vietnamese people, aimed at a long-term sustainable social development.

FRAMEWORK AND STRATEGY

The project “Million bricks for a happy life” was carried out for 9 months, starting from July 2014 till March 2015. With the cost for each bridge around VND 100 million, the fund for this project amounted to more than VND 1 billion (approximately USD 50,000) which was raised from the company’s donation fund and from the sta’s voluntary contribution. Concerted eorts of Dai-ichi Life Vietnam, the contractors, the supervising team, and the local labor were to ensure that all the bridges got nished in good quality for local residents to use before the rainy season.

Combining the aggregate power of volunteering, the project was implemented with enthusiastic involvement of more than 300 employees and agents of Dai-ichi Life Vietnam, not only at its head oce, but also at the 10 local provinces where the bridges are located. The spirit of willing community support as shown in this CSR project is consistent with the company’s core business philosophy of “Thinking People First”, which reects its strong desire to bring sustainable values to the people in need, and to make positive, meaningful dierences for the local communities.

ACHIEVEMENT AND IMPACT

It is estimated that a hundred thousand of local people in the provinces of Vietnam, including Hau Giang, An Giang, Tra Vinh, Tuyen Quang, Lao Cai, Thai Nguyen, Gia Lai, Kon Tum, Quang Binh and Binh Phuoc, enjoy the benet of secured transportation thanks to these new solid bridges.

Mr. Huynh Cam Giang, Chairman of the People’s Committee of Tan My commune, Cho Moi district, An Giang province, said at the new bridge handover ceremony: “The bridge has fostered the goods exchange and transportation between this isolated commune with other areas, hence promoting socio-economic development of the whole area in the long term. This meaningful act of Dai-ichi Life Vietnam has helped to realize our wish for a rm bridge to better facilitate everyday traveling, and for which we are truly grateful”.

In 2014, Dai-ichi Life Vietnam was honored to receive the Prime Minister’s Award in recognition of its outstanding contribution to the Vietnamese community and social welfare.

FUTURE DIRECTION

For the purpose of long-term fuelling for more regular and far-reaching community activities, on September 20th, 2016, Dai-ichi Life Vietnam announced the launch of the CSR Foundation “For a better life”, with a view to supporting the local communities on the areas of education, medical and health care, environment improvement, and other social activities.

Its CSR Foundation coming into operations is the cornerstone for the implementation of signicant social and charitable projects, bringing a better life for the community and fullling its commitment of sustainable development and of being a lifetime partner with the country and its Vietnamese people.
