Batara Sianturi

In his multiple roles and capacities, he became a true champion for financial inclusion.
Mr Batara Sianturi is currently the Chief Executive Officer for Citi Indonesia. However, at the time of his nomination, he was serving as Country Head for Citi Philippines, and it was his contributions in this role, specifically in the area of enterprise development that we are pleased to confer him with the award of Responsible Business Leadership.

As Chief Executive Officer for Citi Philippines, Batara was responsible for all businesses across the franchise in the country. He concurrently served as Citi Regional Head for the Philippines and Guam. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Philippine Business for Social Progress and also served as a member of the Board of Directors of the American Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines. In these multiple roles and capacities, he became a true champion for financial inclusion.

From June 2013 when he was assigned to the Philippines, Batara became a generous supporter of various community initiatives. He served as co-chair with Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Governor Amando Tetangco, Jr. in the annual nationwide search of outstanding micro business owners in the Citi Microentrepreneurship Awards. This program was awarded the Social Empowerment Award for AREA 2014 by Enterprise Asia. Batara’s active participation has taken him to remote provinces, traveling from Luzon to Visayas to Mindanao, all as part of his efforts to truly understand the challenges that Filipino microentrepreneurs face.

Batara also took time to engage high potential micro business owners in the Citi Microenterprise Development Center, funded by Citi Foundation in partnership with Bayan Academy for Social Entrepreneurship. This program is also a recipient of the Social Empowerment Award of AREA 2013 by Enterprise Asia. Batara offered mentoring services on leadership, personal finance and business management to men and women hoping to scale their micro businesses to small and medium enterprises.

In the aftermath of the strongest typhoon to hit the country, Typhoon Haiyan, Batara mobilized his colleagues across the globe and helped raise US$1 million to aid the survivors’ immediate needs as well as long-term rebuilding. His leadership was recognized by the American Association of the Philippines.

In addition to all these, Batara actively campaigned for volunteerism in Citi Philippines, leading year round efforts to green communities, build homes, and mentor youth among others.

Prior to his Philippine assignment, Batara was the Regional Head for Hungary and 12 other countries in Eastern Europe, while serving as the Chief Executive Officer for Citi Hungary. During his 26 years of international banking experience with Citi, he has held a number of senior positions in Consumer, Corporate and Commercial Banking, as well as in Country and Regional management.

An Indonesian national, in 2009, he was named as one of the Top 25 Executives in Indonesia by SWA Magazine and in 2013, was the recipient of the Golden Beehive Memorial Coin Award from the Hungarian Banking Association. In 2014, PeopleAsia magazine recognized him as a Men Who Matter awardee, recognizing his contributions to the banking services sector.

Mr. Sianturi earned two Bachelor of Science degrees in Chemical Engineering and in Polymer/ Macromolecular Science from Case Western Reserve University, as well as a Master of Chemical Engineering degree from Steven’s Institute of Technology and an MBA degree in Finance from St. John’s University.
