CTBC Drug Abuse Prevention Project - Educate and unite against drugs

CTBC Financial Holding Co., Ltd

The Foundation will continue to work hard on drug prevention education and face future challenges with a relentless spirit.

INTRODUCTION

CTBC Holding became aware of the serious problems caused by drug abuse after becoming involved in charitable activities. The Anti-Drug Educational Foundation was, therefore, established in 2015 to help teenagers stay clean. It is also the first Taiwan professional anti-drug educational institution founded by a private sector enterprise. The Foundation reaches out to the public-at-large and to students, thanks to innovative educational methods, aiming at organizing and promoting touring exhibitions, raising students’ awareness on drug abuse prevention, as well as organizing activities to raise the awareness of families and compiling textbooks focused on drug abuse prevention. They also cooperate with national and international anti-drug organizations in order to stay up-to-date with the latest trends and developments, so that they can always provide people with the most accurate information.

FRAMEWORK AND STRATEGY

  • Touring exhibitions
Using interactive platforms, the Foundation provides participants with drugs knowledge such as the smells of drugs and the drastic changes in appearance of those who abuse drugs, as well as using images, videos, and other resources from everyday life. The Foundation hopes to provide the best experience so that drug-related knowledge and understanding can be impressed on participants’ thoughts, shaping an accurate understanding of drug-related issues.
  • Raising students’ awareness
In the past, drug abuse prevention education focused on slogans and dogmas. In contrast, the Foundation tries to adapt pedagogical method to the age group of the students. For instance, elementary school students seem to learn effectively from play enactments, while middle school students are better suited to 3D educational movies and special performances. This has proven to be a far more efficient and personalized way of teaching drug abuse prevention to young students.
  • Compiling textbooks focused on drug abuse prevention
The Foundation has adapted, as a reference, the Life Skills Training (LST) promoted by National Taiwan University Children and Family Research Center. This material was adjusted by professional teachers to generate a series of anti-drug teaching materials to be delivered and promoted by professional teachers. Hope it will prove useful for young people in learning social skills as well as in managing and controlling their emotions.
  • International cooperation
To provide people with the most accurate information regarding drug abuse prevention, the Foundation cooperates with several national and international organizations.
  • Improving the child-parent relationship environment for female prison inmates with children
This project was in cooperation with the Agency of Corrections, Ministry of Justice. The CTBC Anti-Drug Educational Foundation (ADF) donated NTD 3.8 million to help improve prison facilities, hired professional social workers, and helped female prisoners to engage in better parent-child interaction. In doing this, CTBC ADF reduced the risk of these children’s possible future exposure to drugs. The Foundation’s efforts created an environment where addicted mothers are better able to care for and nurture their children. This gives the mothers more incentives to stay away from dangerous drugs and further reduces the risks that their children will turn to drugs in the future.
  • Organizing activities to raise the awareness of families
The Foundation has organized a series of anti-drug educational games to raise the awareness of families. This is a great opportunity for parents to help their children know more about these issues using an educational approach and by participating in games and other major events.

FUTURE DIRECTION

The Foundation is committed to raising young people’s awareness on drug abuse prevention using several platforms and committed to expanding its educational campaign on drug abuse prevention throughout Taiwan, so that everybody can have an accurate understanding of drug abuse and what is at stake. In June 2017, the Foundation won the Executive Yuan’s recognition as the most active team in the field of drug abuse prevention at the national level, and its work was also acknowledged and approved by many other sectors of society. The Foundation will continue to work hard on drug prevention education and face future challenges with a relentless spirit.
