The sustainability methods adopted by Asia Cement in maintaining a sustainable mountain included a complete process of mining and green forestation, mimic natural eco vegetation, innovative plant soil bag technique for quick vegetation.
INTRODUCTION
Embracing a sustainable mission of “building a sustainable green homeland” and adhering to the UN Sustainable Goals (SDGs), Asia Cement had planned and initiated a “Cement Plant/Mining Area Sustainable Green Action Project,” to reach the sustainable green goal of restoring the original forests and the bio-system of multiple species after mining activities, as well as enhancing the efficiency of energy use and reducing the emission of green-house gas.Project focusing on the sustainable mining mountain and low carbon green manufacturing process, required by the Cement Plant/Mining Area Sustainable Green Action Project, Asia Cement also provided the caring to the aboriginal people and promoted sustainable environmental education in the cement plant complex and the mining areas. Both are complemented and improved to each other, thus, the effectiveness of sustainability is multiplied.
FRAMEWORK AND STRATEGY
The sustainability methods adopted by Asia Cement in maintaining a sustainable mountain included a complete process of mining and green forestation, mimic natural eco vegetation, innovative plant soil bag technique for quick vegetation.Cement Plant/Mining Area Sustainable Green Action Project covered the complete range of Asia Cement’s businesses including the extraction work in the mining mountain, low carbon cement manufacturing process and sales, plus the social aspects such as social care and sustainable environmental education. It also integrated the value chain of Asia Cement including the topics of living safety and construction safety.
Most of the project is exclusively developed by Asia Cement. The Asia Cement afforestation program can reach 100% recovery to the original forest in 18 years compared to traditional afforestation methods taking up to 100 to 200 years.
ACHIEVEMENT AND IMPACT
- 6,500 trees were planted, and the restored area was added by 2.6627 hectors.
- The restored area in the mining mountain was 58.5 hectors, the extraction area was 22.0 hectors, and the greenery area was 70.06% of the total mining area.
- Adopting the innovative plant soil bag technique for quick vegetation method, the height of the trees, originally taking at least three years to reach 5-meter coverage, can now be shortened to 4 months.
- The total savings are 138 million kilowatt/hour of power, 43,000metric tons of coal and 300 kiloliters of fuel in each year, equivalent to the reduction of 267,000 metric tons of GHG emission.
- More than 96% of the blast vibrations were less than 1mm/sec, far superior than the US blast vibration standard (19mm/sec), less than 1/10 of it.
- There are 990 employees in the plant, mining area and subcontractors of Asia Cement in which 427 (43%) employees are aboriginal people.
