Metropolitan Waterworks Authority (MWA)
INTRODUCTION
MWA initiated the School Tap Water System Project in 2016. The project was developed from Watershed Forest Conservation Project to honour His Majesty The King (Winner of AREA 2016), a big project consisting of three activities that was reforestation, weir construction and school development. The School Tap Water System Project further improve the school development activity related to MWA expertise by emphasising on the development of tap water system for schools in major area of MWA to meet the needs and the expectation of the project targets, Mae Klong River Basin Communities. The goal is to develop and provide clean water for remote schools and lack access to clean water at least four schools per year and to build the good network between MWA and the communities by bringing out the expertise and knowledge in waterworks of an organisation to help the communities outside the responsible area of MWA.FRAMEWORK AND STRATEGY
School Tap Water System Project brings out the expertise of MWA to help the Mae Klong River Basin Communities, major area of MWA, by developing and improving school tap water system via the development of groundwater system and mountain water system, providing of high water storage, water filter and plumbing system by MWA volunteer team which consists of operational staff and MWA executives from all line of deputy reflecting the unity and cooperation of MWA team. MWA volunteer team has built and supported the school team (consisting of school personnel) to further take care of the tap water system. If there are any problems, they can inquire via social media instantly.ACHIEVEMENT AND IMPACT
Output: From 2016-2018, MWA has provided clean water to 21 schools and plan to provide clean water to at least four schools per year. The cooperation and networking in the area of water conservation among governmental agencies, local authorities, private sectors and various civil societies increase, leading to cooperation networking with MWA in building awareness for CSR and water conservation.Outcome: Students, teachers and school personnel can have equal access to sufficient clean water. This could help to reduce the expense in purchasing bottled waters or the needs to bring their own water from home.
Impact: Decreased hygienic and health problem of students, reduced sick leaves from school and improved quality of life.
School Tap Water System Project won Enterprises of the Year Award in 2017 (SOE Award) for operations to include social and environmental excellence from State Enterprise Policy Office (SEPO), Thailand’s Ministry of Finance on August 18, 2017.
FUTURE DIRECTION
School Tap Water System Project is the project operated in the community area which is important to MWA. The community is the target community MWA would like to develop into mutual sustainability. The Project is placed in the short-term and long-term plan of MWA (Annual Operational Plan and MWA Strategic Administration Plan) allowing the distinct continuous of the operation in the future. This Project also supports the 6th Goal of the total 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.In the fiscal year of 2019, the revision of Annual Operational Plan made the change of School Tap Water System Project into Development/Improvement of Tap Water System Project to further expand the target groups to religious places together with expanding the area to Chao Phraya River Basin, another major area of MWA.
Metropolitan Waterworks Authority (MWA) is a state enterprise under the Ministry of Interior. It started its operation on 16 August 1967 under the Metropolitan Waterworks Act B.E. 2510 (AD 1967) with an obligation to provide raw water sources for waterworks activities, including producing, distributing and selling treated water in Bangkok - Nonthaburi - Samuthprakan, and running other businesses related or beneficial to the waterworks.
