INTRODUCTION

Conservation activities by Pokmaswas “Hijau Daun” and Gresik Power Plant have established the Mangrove Ecotourism as tourist destination which is the only mangrove conservation education in Bawean Island. Utilisation of affected agricultural land by abrasion is treated by planting mangrove and spruce as plant holder in affected area.

By planting mangrove and spruce, it would open up potential to become a mangrove ecotourism destination. Mangrove Ecotourism is an integration of mangrove conservation programmes, coral reef and turtle conservation programmes, eco edu tourism programmes, integrated waste management programmes, and degraded land conversion function programmes into salt farms.

The goal of the programme is to become an educational nature tourism site that is able to maintain environmental sustainability, to improve welfare of society, to develop mangrove based eco edu tourism programmes, to manage coastal and marine areas in an integrated manner, to improve welfare of society through increasing business opportunities and to empower the community.

FRAMEWORK AND STRATEGY

Daun village has around 15 hectares mangrove area. There are 16 known species of mangrove and there are still some which are unknown. The mangrove conservation programmes had begun in 2015 to plant 10,000 mangrove trees, and was planted again in 2017; 10,000 mangrove trees and 2,000 spruce shrimp. In 2018 more than 30,000 mangrove trees had been planted and covered the affected-abrasion land.

Gresik Power Plant also conducts conservation coral reefs by placing mouring bouys in the waters Bawean at 31 points. PT PJB Gresik Power Plant business line is to provide electricity through a power plant. Daun is one of the villages in the ring II of PT PJB Gresik Power Plant which was affected by the Company’s operations. The company carries out its social responsibility functions through the environmental movement and community empowerment.

ACHIEVEMENT AND IMPACT

This project managed mangrove debt of 16 hectares increase in green open space for 3 years around 6.75 hectares, with carbon absorption by mangrove forests 1,941 tons per year and temperature drop of 0.04 degrees Celsius. They succeeded in conserving 16 types of mangrove trees. In waste management, they were able to manage 22.5 kg of plastic waste per month. Community participation rate was increased by 54 percent (2017-2018) and formed 2 new institutions. Reasonable amount of people no longer cut mangrove trees for their own needs, the habit of hunting turtles was stopped and fishermen tethered the ship using mooring buoys. 30 fishermen carried out sustainability fishing for sustainable biodiversity. This programme created 8 new jobs and absorbed 208 workers, with 12 percent of women involved and environmental conservation trainers total 10 people. This has increased the number of ecotourism education in Gresik regency which has given Hijau Daun ecotourism an income of USD 15,965 per year.

FUTURE DIRECTION

The Company strives to maintain the development of educational tourism by introducing and providing material in installed solar power plants in tourist areas of mangrove and improving facilities for visitors. The formation of new business groups such as the taxi bike institution, mangrove refined products institution, processed fish institution, homestay group and salt cultivation. Those institutions are under the auspices of Pokmaswas “Hijau Daun”. Furthermore, they wish these programmes are able to open jobs, increase people’s income and become a system incorporated in eco edu tourism in Bawean Island.

In conservation, the Company has improved night patrol. Members of the Pokmaswas routinely conduct patrols with the aim of monitoring and protecting turtles from predators (lizards) when the turtles stop at the beach. They improve the first audiovisual education class about environmental conservation on the coast of Bawean with the use of Solar Power Plant with a capacity of 400 WP. In 2019, they target to improve welfare of the society through increasing more business opportunities and maximising community empowerment.
