INTRODUCTION
This project describes the role of Trakindo in the national education system through the lens of shared value. The project aligns the mission and creating the company’s sustainable growth while addressing the unmet needs of heavy-equipment graduates. Established since 1996 the project has been conducted in 9 vocational schools and 6 polytechnics all over Indonesia. While the ultimate outcomes are creating qualified and job-ready graduates in heavy equipment, the project focuses on building the capacity of the educators as well as building the national curriculum with the government. The program integrates completely with different business units within the company and has contributed significantly to the bottom lines and profitability.Fully in line with the vision and mission of Trakindo “To set up an entity that creates worthwhile and challenging job opportunities to as many Indonesians as possible”, Trakindo’s overall program goals are committed to helping mold job-ready technicians to work in the heavy equipment industry.
FRAMEWORK AND STRATEGY
The program period is 3 years since the inception of the students until the students graduate and participate in skill validation. The methods focus on: i) Teacher technical competency in teaching and learning methodologies and hands-on skills; through numbers of educator technical trainings and On-the-Job Trainings, ii) The competency of the heavy-equipment graduates and the readiness to cope with the needs of industry through a combination of classroom based education by the schools and practical work experience or on-the-job training by Trakindo, and iii) To support the government in the development of quality education, strategy by developing a heavy equipment studies curriculum based on the in-service training curriculum applied by Trakindo.Trakindo’s business goal is creating sustainable growth that will lead to people success, including customer, shareholders, employees, business partners and society. The Strategies through supported roadmaps consist of: Building enduring partnerships with suppliers, Tapping into the latest technology, and Contributing to the community as a responsible corporate citizen.
Trakindo is investing more strategically into their business environment, in ways that would facilitate business objectives while also contributing to national education development. It is a shared value with Trakindo as a business and community such as Ministry of National Education & Ministry of Research and technology and higher education as well as educational institutions. The program intregates business into the community and promotes a sustainable business model. It also develops human capital.
ACHIEVEMENT AND IMPACT
The program has led to significant results, i.e. More than 2,500 job-ready graduates since year 2000 have been produced, More than 1,500 heavy equipment students are available in Indonesia, 60% of these graduates have been employed by Trakindo, and 40% of these graduates have been employed by its customers, subsidiaries and other heavy equipment industry players.For sustainability the curriculum was adopted in Directorate General of Vocational School and to the Indonesian Qualifications Framework (IQF) for polytechnic levels. The curriculum is being applied by more than 60 state and private vocational schools throughout Indonesia. Educational institutions at vocational school and polytechnic level throughout Indonesia are able to implement heavy equipment program by implementing the curriculum, developing teacher skills and setting up facilities with the reference from the Ministry of Education.
FUTURE DIRECTION
Technician resource will not be the only source that Trakindo shows, but Trakindo will source another function needed by the company with the similar strategies and under internship level scheme.
PT Trakindo Utama (Trakindo) is the sole authorized dealer in Indonesia for Caterpillar, the world’s largest manufacturer of mining, forestry, agriculture and construction equipment, diesel and natural gas engines, industrial engines and generator sets. Trakindo was established in 1970 by the founder, AHK Hamami, was appointed Caterpillar’s authorized dealer in Indonesia in 1971 and now has more than 65 branches around the country.
