FRAMEWORK AND STRATEGY

The Darma Mandiri or Economics Programme targets areas around the project site where the people are lowly skilled with a low education level. Therefore, most of them can’t be employed by Darma Henwa. For this reason, Darma Henwa launched the special programme to empower the people especially the young people to enable them to start small businesses in agriculture, farming (Darma Tani) and embroidery (Darma Sandang). Under the programme, an embroidery machine was provided to a workshop run by teenagers from the Forum Komunikasi Pemuda Indonesia (FKPI) in the sub-district of Kintap, near the Asam-Asam Coal Project site in South of Kalimantan. With the embroidery machine, the FKPI teenagers can earn an income by taking orders from the local government to sew the logo of the Tnah Laut Regency government in South of Kalimantan. The programme also provides rice seeds for the community in the Bengalon Coal Project site in East Kalimantan.

ACHIEVEMENT AND IMPACT

The ultimate goal of the Darma Mandiri programme is to raise the living standard of the local community by providing them the skills, knowledge and resources to be economically independent. One such business set up as a direct result of the programme is the production of logos for Darma Henwa’s uniforms. In this case, as the project initiator, Darma Henwa is also the project customer as well as stakeholder of the business. Darma Henwa places an order with the company from the local community and provides feedbacks on the quality of products. To ensure the sustainability of the programme, Darma Henwa’s CSR team assists in conducting a market survey to find potential customers. Then, Darma Henwa provides the special training on embroidery technology which includes how to operate the machine. After the teenagers have fully mastered the technology and the processes, Darma Henwa will give them the machine for free. The project has created a multiplier effect on the local economy with orders coming from companies around the area as well as schools.

FUTURE DIRECTION

In November 2015, Tanah Laut Regency celebrated its 49th Anniversary where the local government organized a development exhibition participated by 11 sub-districts and all government service departments of Tanah Laut Regency. At the exhibition, the FKPI’s teenagers’ booth was awarded the best booth by the Government of Tanah Laut Regency.

The Darma Mandiri programme is a pilot project initiated by Darma Henwa. Due to the success and good response from this programme and the positive impact on the community, the company plans to start this project at each of its project sites to help the local community.
