INTRODUCTION
HELP Earth, or Harnessing Energy Literacy for Planet Earth, started with initiatives geared towards energy literacy and environmental awareness among the youth and community. It focuses on awareness through education, strengthening of advocacy and empowerment of leaders as its keys for sustainability.HELP Earth Environment complements the education program of PHINMA Energy. This program provides a venue for like-minded groups and individuals to participate in the advocacies for the environment, as well as create a learning ground for students and future foresters.
FRAMEWORK AND STRATEGY
PHINMA Energy upholds its moral and social obligation as an energy company and is committed to support initiatives for the environment especially in areas where we operate.We have two major goals in our environment program: sequestration of carbon footprint, and preservation of the biodiversity of the ecosystem around our areas of operation. To achieve this, we designed three projects for specific focus areas: HELP Earth Green Initiative for reforestation, HELP Earth Blue Handprint for coastal management projects, and HELP Earth Yellow Project for waste management initiatives.
We make sure that our environmental programs are appropriate and localized to its surroundings. To achieve these goals, we place a special focus on awareness drives and on mobilizing like-minded individuals from local agencies, environment groups and local communities to ensure the sustainability and effectiveness of the project.
ACHIEVEMENT AND IMPACT
By year-end 2016, we have recorded a survival rate of 85% (92% for upland reforestation, and 70% for urban planting) in our 82-hectare adopted forests in 3 different sites in Bataan, Bulacan, and Guimaras. We also make sure that all seedlings planted are native and indigenous to our project sites to protect its biodiversity. There is regular monitoring of the survival rate of our seedlings as we tap the technical expertise and presence of our local communities and partners to assist us in the process.Our company has already started the initiatives for our Blue Handprint Project by adopting two new sites for mangrove reforestation. This is in addition to the 5 coastal sites that we have assisted for clean-up drives in Bulacan, Guimaras, Iloilo, La Union and Zambales.
HELP Earth Environment was also able to mobilize 100% participation from our employees on ground. This affirms our commitment to make lives better for our partner communities by embedding CSR DNA at all levels in the organization.
FUTURE DIRECTION
Coming from our valuable experience for the past 2 years, we see collaboration is key in sustaining our efforts in the community. PHINMA Energy takes the lead in creating avenues for partnership with local agencies and communities to create synergy. We would like to replicate our strong performance in the green initiative to our blue handprint projects by establishing new ties with like-minded groups in pursuit of a more comprehensive coastal management program.Our environment initiative will also continue to complement HELP Earth Education by integrating environmental awareness in the educational system with more focus on developing learning materials based on their locality and reality. We believe that by placing education at the core of our environment program, we will create more sustainable advocacies for future generations.
