This module aims to delve into the essential aspects of performing a materiality assessment, along with strategies to enhance the assessment process and its derived insights. The module will commence by outlining the pivotal stages involved in conducting a materiality assessment, followed by an in-depth exploration of tactical approaches applicable to each stage. Various methodologies for establishing a foundational roster of issues will be examined and their potential impacts analyzed using the materiality funnel framework. Genuine stakeholder engagement will also be emphasized as a pivotal element within this assessment.

With over 30 years of experience in key roles at EPU, the Prime Ministers Department as well as UNDP, Muthusamy brings invaluable expertise and practical solutions to the Malaysian & ASEAN private sector in ESG consulting. Currently, he is the Managing Director and consulting trainer at Sunstone Consulting. With a strong background in policy planning, project implementation, capacity and development financing building initiatives, as well as international technical assistance programs, Muthusamy possesses a deep understanding of the requirements for building successful ESG strategies for corporations. His expertise and successful leadership have also led him to be invited to numerous capacity-building, technical missions, and conferences in Japan, the UK, Jordan, Denmark, South Africa, the Netherlands, Thailand, Finland, the USA, South Korea, and more.

His key achievements include almost 15 years in policy planning and implementation of the Malaysia 5 Year Development Plans, serving as Deputy Head of Secretariat for the 9th Malaysia Plan, as well as managing over 10 million USD in environmental governance funds for GEF (Global Environment Facility). Throughout his career with the Government and UNDP Country Office, Muthusamy has acquired a deep understanding of the processes, approaches, and methodologies for sustainable development programs including environmental/conservation financing, and has guided the relevant participants and stakeholders in the constructive adoption of appropriate processes in line with national and state priorities.

Now, he has extended his focus to working closely with the private sector across finance, manufacturing, technology, SMEs, and more to create actionable plans for ESG implementation in line with government policies and international industry trends. Muthusamy uses his institutional knowledge and expertise across sustainability related financial planning, project management, leadership coaching, training, and KPI development and measurement to guide organizations to successfully adopt and adapt the evolving ESG frameworks into their business with confidence.
