Innovation in Crab Shell Waste Processing Into Liquid Chitosan Fertilizer
PT Pupuk Kalimantan Timur

Project Commitment to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

INTRODUCTION
As an area located on the sea coast, the city of Bontang has a very high potential for marine commodity products. One of them is crab meat commodities found in restaurants and meat processing business centers. The most fundamental problem arising from this is the environmental pollution caused by the discharge of crab shell waste into the sea. Addressing the public’s concern for the environment is also a very important goal of this program.Through innovations developed by the CSR team at PKT, crab shell waste is processed by the company into liquid chitosan products that have economic value as liquid fertilizer. With this innovation affecting the developing community, PKT hopes that economic independence will emerge from surrounding businesses and that a circular economic philosophy will be adopted by the community.

FRAMEWORK AND STRATEGY
This program has been systematically planned and carried out from 2019 to 2023. All the stages of this process from group formation, knowledge transfer, production management training, product result testing involving independent laboratories, and marketing strategies to making this liquid chitosan fertilizer product is considered as a diversification of one of PKT’s products. This liquid chitosan fertilizer product is also one of the pilot products that is used in the campaign of the company’s flagship CSR campaign to use organic and balanced fertilizers.ACHIEVEMENT AND IMPACT
The success of this program is able to create several positive things for groups of companies and communities such as the additional income for 10 housewives, marginalized people involved in managing this program, and the hiring of 4 workers which were newly graduated students. Regarding the environmental dimension, this program has succeeded in converting 920kg of crab shell waste which could have polluted the environment to 108kg of environmentally friendly liquid chitosan products.FUTURE DIRECTION
As one of the companies whose raw materials for the production process depend on natural resources, PKT is obliged to maintain the ecosystem’s sustainability and balance so as to create harmony between people, the planet while fostering partnership, peace, and prosperity. Besides that, the company’s proactivity in creating community independence in social, educational, and economic terms is also one of its strategic steps in carrying out sustainability in the company’s business processes in the long term.
