INTRODUCTION
PT Badak NGL has consistently contributed actively to developing the people in Bontang City through the CSR program known as COMDEV (community development). Currently, the program empowers activities in an effort to create community independence from social, environmental, and economic aspects.Beginning in 2020, the “Community-Based Waste Management Investment Program” is an initiative of PT Badak NGL in collaboration with the Government of Bontang City and involves Waste Bank Groups in Bontang City as partners. These partners are Telihan Recycle Waste Bank, Tanjung Mamat Fiberglass, and Ceria Waste Bank. This cooperation led to various kinds of environmental management activities that tackle problems such as that waste in Bontang City has increased by 55% in the last 10 years, the behavior of throwing waste into the sea, and the lack of public awareness in managing waste.
The program’s activities include PT Badak LNG reducing the generation of aluminum and polyurethane waste. The company also pursues the reduction of Rp5,480,000 in the operational costs of the government’s dump truck owing to the community-run program, and the reduction of Rp2,679,750 in the waste management costs of the company’s non-B3 waste. This program successfully reduced the amount of household waste sent to Bontang’s landfill by 1,727.8 kilograms; Waste Bank Groups can also open new job opportunities, improve community competence, empower young people & housewives, and expand the reach of employment social security.
FRAMEWORK AND STRATEGY
The CSR program focuses on four pillars, which include Empowerment, Capacity Building, Infrastructure, and Charity Programs. PT Badak NGL’s role as a world-class company is to invest in character-building and advanced skills in human resources are the keys to the company’s success. By adopting the same philosophy for its CSR program the company will help empower individuals to achieve independence, both in society and in their lives by implementing good environmental management and creating share value.In its planning and implementation, PT Badak NGL’s Community Development program involves several relevant stakeholders, such as local communities, non-governmental organizations, companies, and others. The company has run several community empowerment programs, supporting small businesses, providing initial capital, providing skills according to their fields, teaching planned and organized work patterns, instilling a high work ethic, and helping to develop outputs that create good community welfare, economically and socially.
ACHIEVEMENT AND IMPACT
The economic benefits felt by the community from the “Community-Based Waste Management Investment” program are an increase in the income of the management group and waste bank managers from IDR 300.000 to IDR 500.000. As well as the turnover of waste management at the Coastal Waste Bank of IDR 14.000.000. Community groups have received income from drum waste processing into furniture amounting to IDR 51.275.000.Besides that, 101 people participated in World Clean-Up Day activities, 167 people have collected and sorted waste in Bontang the coastal city, 114 people participated in Waste Donation activities, 106 people have been educated in waste management, 899 people are now able to sort waste independently.
There is also one Waste Bank administrator who is the regional coordinator of the National Waste Bank, guiding the growing public awareness about environmental management in sustainability. The community has shown the existence of new habits in the community of sorting waste at the household level, implementing an inclusive program where its activities have involved women, especially in managing waste.
FUTURE DIRECTION
The “Community-Based Waste Management Investment” is a sustainable environmental management program that incorporates elements of community empowerment in it. This program is one of the social innovations because it is something new and unique. Through the CSR program, the company tries to assist the community in improving their economic stability through waste management, as an effort to overcome the waste problem in Bontang city.Several training activities have been done to support the community capacity and the Waste Bank Groups who are members of the “Community-Based Waste Management Investment” program, such as propeller manufacturing training, constructing metal/aluminum smelting furnaces, plastic waste into fuel oil processing training, and aluminum-based cool box production and utilization training.
PT Badak NGL hopes it can provide opportunities for the community to open new job opportunities for them, as well as an effort to increase the community group income. Future activities in the program, include managing non-toxic and hazardous waste to be processed into useful goods and providing economic value for the community
PT Badak NGL is a producer of liquefied natural gas (LNG). It was established on 26
November 1974, as a limited liability company and is headquartered in Jakarta, with a sole
production facility located in the Municipality of Bontang, Province of East Kalimantan,
Republic of Indonesia. PT Badak NGL is a nonprofit entity, whose assets are fully owned by
the Government of the Republic of Indonesia, under the Ministry of Finance.
