PCSC Encourages Reading and Sustainable Education

President Chain Store Corp.

Project Commitment to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

INTRODUCTION

President Chain Store Corporation (PCSC) has long been committed to community service and noticed a lack of reading resources in rural elementary schools. Since 2011, PCSC has been promoting “Earn Points from Reading and Redeem Breakfast” at 711 Xinjiaxian stores, which has driven the book borrowing rate of 4 local schools to increase by 5 times. The project was so successful that PCSC expanded this project to a national scale in 2014, which became the “Reading Encouragement” project.

FRAMEWORK AND STRATEGY

In 2020, PCSC noticed a gap in sustainable teaching materials within the syllabus, thus, the company is working to proactively provide sustainable teaching materials to students throughout the nation. In addition to the “Collect Points by Reading” program, the “Good Neighbor Classroom” initiative was also held in neighboring stores, turning the company’s stores into an extended educational field.

Since 2021, through the “One School One Project” initiative, PCSC has been supporting one school each year by filming documentaries on how teachers and students pursue their dreams. PCSC has helped by holding an art exhibition for students at Tainan Liu Jia (Tung Hu Branch) Elementary School and held a one-day cycling event for Chia Yi He Shun Elementary School, encouraging children to embrace the power of reading.

ACHIEVEMENT AND IMPACT

By the end of 2022, PCSC managed to cooperate with 110 schools to jointly promote its reading plan to students.

In that same year, PCSC also cooperated with its subsidiary, RSI and Supply Chain CLC to leverage the company’s sustainable papermaking technology and built 2 paper libraries with 5,000kgs of recycled cartons from PCSC’s store. This has helped reduced 29,000kgs of carbon emissions from Earth and has become a prime example of the best-case scenario of a circular economy in the progress to achieve sustainable education.

FUTURE DIRECTION

PCSC will continue its various programs and initiatives to enhance community interaction and provide local and real-time support through its 7-ELEVEN store’s resources. In 2023, the company will integrate its “All Town, All Store, All-day Service Plan” and invite resource-lacking schools to join the “Reading Encouragement” project thus improving the M-shaped education for elementary schools and lack of sustainable resources. This will also allow more children to pursue their dreams and goals through reading.
Uni-President Enterprises introduced 7-ELEVEN to Taiwan and was the first to offer 24-hour services with bright, clean stores that can meet customer demands immediately. Its unchanging mission is to provide comprehensive services and create a brand-new high-quality lifestyle.
