AMD Learning Lab: Stem Courses For The Next Generation Of Engineers

Advanced Micro Devices (Singapore) Pte Ltd

Project Commitment to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

INTRODUCTION

AMD is all about pushing the boundaries of what is possible in high-performance and adaptive computing to help the best and the brightest tackle the world’s toughest challenges. From medical discoveries and scientific breakthroughs to solutions for more efficient use of natural resources, AMD’s technologies are helping transform lives and the planet for the better.

AMD is especially passionate about enabling the imagination and creativity of the next generation. In students’ hands, technology encourages their exploration, imagination, and learning – opening doors to new careers and possibilities. That is why AMD partners with local organizations to establish AMD-powered Learning Labs that inspire students to pursue education in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).

The company provides hardware and other technical support in each new lab, and AMD employees volunteer in ongoing engagement through teaching, curriculum development, career talks, contest judging, job interview practices, and similar practical experiences. Since 2019, AMD Learning Labs have benefitted students and teachers in six (with more under development) key site communities worldwide, including Singapore.

FRAMEWORK AND STRATEGY

AMD believes that access to high-quality education and technology is a necessity to build proficiency and passion for skills and careers in STEM. This access will develop the future workforce, give vibrancy to the communities in which everyone lives and works, and promote a more competitive marketplace that thrives on innovation. But many students lack the needed technology tools, especially students living in underserved or impoverished communities. AMD is uniquely positioned to help provide computer equipment, shaping the future of computer labs inside and outside the classroom while encouraging STEM learning and digital literacy for vulnerable groups.

The company partners with schools, educators, and local nonprofit organizations to provide AMD processor-based equipment to outfit AMD Learning Labs with an aim to inspire students to pursue STEM education and meaningfully engage with their teachers and other educators.

ACHIEVEMENT AND IMPACT

AMD has enjoyed a long-standing partnership with Chen Su Lan Methodist Children’s Home. Through the AMD Learning Labs, the Children’s Home is implementing an exciting curriculum to advance its students’ capabilities and understanding of STEM concepts with the help of AMD employee volunteers who are assisting in creating new courses. Currently, the courses being offered are Robotics, 3D Printing, Scratch Programming, PC 101, and Digital Art. Additionally, in 2021, AMD also launched a partnership with Changkat Changi Secondary School to conduct STEM courses. These courses helped to support the expansion of STEM curricula and offered opportunities for students to gain hands-on experience with computer hardware and software alongside ongoing engagement with AMD volunteer employees.

Between both engagements, so far 15 workshops have been conducted, benefitting more than 100 students.

FUTURE DIRECTION

AMD intends to continue STEM courses with Chen Su Lan Methodist Children’s Home and Changkat Changi Secondary School. Whenever there are opportunities, AMD is also interested to explore including more partners in its STEM program.

As STEM courses are planned and developed in-house, this CSR project is expected to be sustained into the future with active participation from AMD volunteer employees. Course development will be an ongoing effort to enhance learning outcomes and improve learners’ experience.
