Food Education for Preschoolers – MOS Burger DIY Project

An-Shin Food Services Co., Ltd.

Project Commitment to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

INTRODUCTION

MOS Burger (An-Shin) was originated in Japan. The company held their first food education campaign in 2006, which involved the engagement of students from Chang-An Elementary School. The purpose of food education is to establish correct dietary concepts for children and educate them to avoid imbalanced diet. Each campaign is handled by 4 staff with 2 hours of preparation and course implementation respectively, with 20 participants for each session. The course content includes self-introduction, 6 major nutrients, essential nutrients for the human body, correct hand washing steps, clothing and appearance, and burger DIY.

FRAMEWORK AND STRATEGY

Safe, healthy, and sustainable are the cores of their sustainability strategy. The company integrates food education into their profession by using one of their products,“Honey Grilled Chicken Burger”, as one of the teaching materials. They teach the children about nutrition values by introducing each ingredient of their burgers such as lettuce, onion, and chicken. Besides, they also teach them about the correct hand washing techniques and knowledge about nutrition and food safety. MOS Burger hopes to help the children develop the ability to make appropriate decisions in diet and maintain healthy dietary habits.

ACHIEVEMENT AND IMPACT

More than 1,178 campaigns were held as of 2020, taking 4,712 hours with an accumulated total of 22,245 participants. Due to the impacts of the pandemic, the company had to limit the participants to 10 people for each session in 2020 as a proactive for social distancing. More than 128 education sessions were held that took 628 hours with 1,293 participants. Most of the company’s branches are community-based, and their products and brand are highly recognised by many parents and children who had participated in their food education activities. Therefore, MOS Burger believes that parent and child customers play an important role in their business’ success.

FUTURE DIRECTION

The company has been offering food education for school-age children since 2016. In recent years, they found that most of the food education courses targeted only school-age children. Therefore, they decided to introduce a food education course for pre-schoolers in 2018. In addition, the Elderly Dementia Association was inspired by the company’s persistence in food education, and they found that the food education of MOS Burger was suitable for the elderly as well which led to the first “Burger DIY for Elderly” campaign in September 2020. The company held 2 campaigns for the elderly on the 4th and 25th of March in 2020. In the future, MOS Burger hopes to promote food education across Taiwan and move forward towards food education for all ages.
An-Shin Food Services (1259) is known as “MOS Burger” in Taiwan, with 292 branches (as of 2021). They offer various kinds of burgers, rice burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, salads, desserts, soups, and others for both dine-in and take-out.
