INTRODUCTIONSports for Growth is a social intervention supported by Uflex for the benefit of underprivileged children and youths of India. Uflex has partnered with a leading not-for-profit organization Society for Transformation, Inclusion and Recognition through Sports (STAIRS) to roll out activities in Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat. Apart from popular games like cricket, football and hockey, other sports like sepak takraw, volley ball, athletics, wrestling, kabaddi and kho-kho are strongly promoted under this initiative. Sports for Growth comprises sub-interventions like Uflex Khelo Delhi, Cricket Championship, Cricket Scholarship, Uflex Khelo Haryana, Khelo Himachal, Khelo Uttar Pradesh and STAIRS School Football League (SSFL).
Goal: To realize every child’s right to play freely as enshrined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) irrespective of caste, creed, religion, gender and socio-economic background.
Mission: To contribute towards empowerment and well-being of underprivileged children and youths who are at the risk of social exclusion.
FRAMEWORK AND STRATEGYSports for Growth as an intervention relies heavily on the support of stakeholders that make and shape the Sports Ecosystem. Foremost is the role of sports coordinators at the STAIRS centres that have been adopted by Uflex. These coordinators are vested with the responsibility of keeping the children engaged in sports and alleviate dropouts. Further there are trained coaches that mentor and train the children and youths. In an endeavour to institutionalize sports activities to have a sustained impact on children, the coordinators take into consideration other important state and non-state actors like parents, principals of schools, physical training teachers at the schools, constitutional bodies like the village panchayat, state level and central sport authorities, policy makers and social workers. All stakeholders together ensure that there is no discrimination in the way of unhindered access to sports facilities for the underprivileged children and youths.
Uflex strongly believes in shared prosperity and the importance of a participatory approach for ensuring business sustainability. Sports for Growth is a carefully planned intervention to enhance the personalities of children and youths so that they remain physically fit and mentally alert and are able to contribute to the overall progress of the nation. Through Sports for Growth we endeavour to package the personalities of the not so privileged children and youths by infusing agility, confidence and self-esteem in them.
The most important and unique feature of Sports for Growth is the fact that it is a sustained endeavor to institutionalize sports for the overall development of the underprivileged children and youths of India by taking the states and non-state actors together.
ACHIEVEMENT AND IMPACTUflex regularly monitors the progress of the Sports for Growth initiative to measure the impact of the intervention on the primary and secondary beneficiaries. Over 5000 children play daily at the centres adopted by Uflex under the Khelo Delhi initiative. During FY 2015-16 around 5000 children (including 900 girls) and youths accessed various sports under Khelo Himachal. For Khelo Haryana this number stood at 1100. By the end of FY 2015-16, 240 differently abled youths were benefited through the Khelo Uttar Pradesh intervention. Stairs School Football League is looked up to as the tournament for spotting talent for Under-17 (U 17) FIFA World Cup that will be hosted by India in 2017. Started from Delhi in 2014 and having been recently launched in Gujarat SSFL shall engage over 120,000 budding footballers across India in a phased manner over the next 5 years.
FUTURE DIRECTIONUflex will continue to support Sports for Growth to bring it to a self-sustaining level through a participatory approach involving various stake holders that include the state and non-state participants. Uflex strongly believes in the institutionalization of sports to have maximum impact on the children and youths. Uflex places a lot of emphasis on documenting good practices so that the interventions could be improved and replicated by other stakeholders. This also is a very important component of our overall CSR interventional strategy in future.
