Mr.Tanarat Pasawongse is the third generation of the Pasawongse family to head the chain of Hua Seng Heng Goldsmith shops founded by his grandfather in one of Thailand’s most vibrant streets, Yaowarat. A pioneer of his era, Tanarat quickly took advantage of the rising and volatile gold prices and to infuse his own sense of business and Thai culture into the world of gold trading. He was the first one to introduce a trading room featuring teller windows which is similar to conventional banks to facilitate over-the-counter (OTC) trades for local clients. Today hundreds of trades are conducted through this innovative queuing system.
In 2008,Tanarat established Hua Seng Heng Gold Futures Co., Ltd. (HGF), the first derivative brokerage house to trade gold futures contracts in the Thailand Futures Exchange (TFEX). After finding unparalleled success in gold futures in just four short years, TFEX has granted his company with full derivative license which now earns the highest market share among all gold futures brokers with leading products in gold futures, set 50 futures, and single stock futures.
Hua Seng Heng Gold Futures Co. Ltd. then branched into mutual funds as a selling agent and partnered with 13 of the leading asset management companies in the market. In 2011 the company garnered much public attention for its collaboration with Krung Thai Asset Management in launching the first gold ETF in Thailand. Today HGF operates Thailand’s top 4 gold ETF funds, provides much of the physical gold in the market, serves as a market maker for funds, and holds the largest market shares among all securities brokers in the TFEX market.
Expanding on his goals for the coming years, Tanarat established Hua Seng Heng Commoditas Co., Ltd.in 2009.In order to supply precious metals for his chain of shops. This company quickly grew to become Thailand’s largest import and export company for gold and silver. The company later diversified into membership based trading helping to lead to the development of call center trading and online trading, which currently accounts for 70% of group revenue. The company also introduced one of the most popular gold saving programs that allows investors to accumulate gold holdings based on monthly deductions. By 2012 company revenues were at a record high of 762 billion Baht, and just one year later Hua Seng Heng Commoditas earned the highest market share in gold trading business.
Aside from setting up new businesses and adapting them to a changing world, Tanarat still finds time to keep up with the family gold shop. In 2013 he opened an all-in-one shop serving both jewelers and investors in Downtown Bangkok’s commercial district helping to bring his unique brand to office workers. Tanarat works on bringing a fusion of modernity into traditional gold with many seasonal gift ideas and offering customers to ability to customize their own texts and pictures onto gold bars and ornaments in many of his patented products.
In 2013 Tanarat reached a milestone in his efforts to expand internationally: he set up an overseas entity in Singapore and is on the verge of developing a hub for trading with global partners. With his greatest effort, he has introduced the latest user friendly online trading platform to increase the range of customers from younger to older generation. This off-shore presence represents Hua Seng Heng Group’s first venture into providing services for all future wholesale throughout the worlds.
Tanarat was named 2011 Quality Person of the Year in the securities business by the Foundation of Science and Technology Council of Thailand. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Engineering from the University of Washington, USA and MBA from Sasin Graduate Institute of Administration. Always seeking to further his education, Tanarat is enrolled in the Capital Market Academy class of 2016. His interests include reading, playing squash, and collecting gold pieces.
