Holding the post of Group Managing Director of the multi award-winning corporation Hatten Group, Dato’ Colin Tan is a born entrepreneur. He is best known for his first bold career move in 2006 where he took on an abandoned project in the heart of Melaka and transformed it into Dataran Pahlawan Melaka Megamall, the largest retail empire in the Southern region measuring over 2 million sq. ft. Since then, the Group has gone on to develop the largest hotel in Melaka, Hatten Hotel, with 704 deluxe suites; Hatten City, a 25-acre, integrated mixed development valued at over RM2 billion with three interlinked phases fronting the Straits of Melaka and Harbour City, the iconic marine-themed development on Pulau Melaka.
Born and raised in Singapore, Dato’ Colin Tan was interested in property development since his youth. He was intrigued by the challenge of planning and successfully developing areas from the ground up and decided to branch out by establishing his own Melaka-based property firm – Hatten Group. In his current position as Group MD, Dato’ Colin Tan is involved in strategic planning and overall management of the Group’s extensive development portfolio. He oversees the entire scope of the Hatten Group of Companies which now incorporates its own development and construction segment, asset investment arm, builds and manages world-class hospitality ventures and operates its own retail management and brand franchising divisions.
With Dato’ Tan at the helm, Hatten Group has grown across Malaysia’s Southern Region to encompass 6 offices in Melaka, Kuala Lumpur, Seremban, Johor and Singapore with an 800-strong workforce. Dato’ Tan’s drive has led to the Group’s prolific portfolio expansion with five large-scale mixed developments completed within Melaka City centre (Dataran Pahlawan Melaka Megamall, Hatten Square, Hatten Hotel, Hatten City Phase 1, Terminal Pahlawan, Estadia Hotel) and three more under construction (Harbour City, Imperio Mall & Residence, Vedro by the River). In Melaka alone, Hatten Group’s accumulative project GDV is valued at more than RM3 billion to date. As the dominant authority in Melaka’s property and retail sectors, Dato’ Tan is now reaching across to new territories in Johor (Capital City), Seremban (Unicity) and Pahang (upcoming).
He has already began to further solidify the Group’s business model by diversifying its businesses to encompass not just retail, but also luxury residential units and hotels to education, medi-wellness, arts and culture. Having amassed over 500 acres landbank in Malaysia alone, Dato’ Tan is confident of establishing Hatten Group’s status as the most prolific multi-faceted corporation in the industry.
Dato’ Tan believes that a business must be built upon sustainability. Therefore to further establish the Hatten Brand, he has initiated a new division under Retail Management which is responsible for handling Brand Franchising. Notable brands under the Hatten’s own retail division include Cosha Retail, TBC (teddie bear themed café) and EtonHouse International Pre-school, Melaka.
Fast gaining a reputation as a dynamic young entrepreneur, Dato Tan’s visionary leadership has resulted in the Group’s outstanding track record of 55 international property awards to date. Among his employees, he is known for his quick and decisive personality. Extremely knowledgeable in all aspects of the industry, Dato’ Tan is capable of mapping out the entire proceedings for the development of a project from the ground right up to completion and subsequent management and investment. Nevertheless, he is always hungry to learn, to adapt and to integrate new trends into his plans. His flexibility, bold vision and infectious enthusiasm continue to inspire the team towards greater heights of success.
Always leading by example, Dato’ Tan believes that the human aspect of his company is the main push behind Hatten Group. Implementing comprehensive training and re-training programmes for employees of all levels, he “invests in talent” and believes that “The key to success is a cohesive, skilled and all-rounded team that works together as 1Hatten.”
Dato’ Tan lives life to the fullest, standing by his motto that nothing is ‘impossible’, changing it to ‘I M POSSIBLE’. He doesn’t take ‘no’ for an answer and is always proposing new ways and strategies to push forward in the highly competitive property industry. This indomitable spirit has led to Hatten Group’s status as one of the most outstanding corporations in the South East Asia region.
Dato’ Tan said the Group distinguished itself from the saturated property industry simply because of its Vision of “Building Tomorrow Together”. He finds that the most rewarding aspect of his job is when he is able to affect and transform the lives of the communities in the areas that the Group operates in.
Beyond just building towering developments, he is also keen on developing awareness within the local community. Through Hatten Cares, the Group regularly initiates monthly Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects such as fund-raising events, environmental campaigns and healthcare initiatives to promote social welfare and awareness in the local community. Previous CSR partnerships include UNICEF, World Vision, Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF), 60+ Earth Hour, Amitofo Care Centre (ACC) and numerous local charitable organisations. In the long term, Hatten Group is planning to adopt a local charity as its main beneficiary.
