Born in Penang in 1956, Datuk Andrew TK Lim became the Managing Director of KL SOGO in 2002, and he successfully led KL SOGO into one of the leading retailers and the largest single free-standing department store in Malaysia. He received his early education at Penang Free School and he is a firm believer in sharing credit with his team and taking care of his KL SOGO’s colleagues and his business partners. His exceptional vision and steadfast management principle have helped him to retain high performers and to grow KL SOGO’s business successfully in a highly competitive retail environment.
Datuk Andrew Lim was called to the Malaysian Bar in 1982 and under careful mentoring by his late father, Mr Lim Cheng Poh who was a prominent Barrister-at-Law in Penang, he became the Managing Partner in Messrs Lim Cheng Poh, Lim & Rahim from 1992 up to 2002, specializing in banking, corporate, commercial and international business contracts. Then, he was merely a Barrister who had no experience in the retailing industry but he happily accepted the challenges, because he had his fellow colleagues and close friends in TeamSOGO who were there to advise and help him to make sound and successful business decisions.
KL SOGO was originally owned by PERNAS Corporation of Malaysia, and SOGO Co., Ltd of Japan. Datuk Andrew Lim was previously their legal advisor and a Director of KL SOGO. In 2002, Datuk Andrew Lim initiated a management buyout and KL SOGO today is a 100% Malaysian wholly owned and operated entity. KL SOGO stands within a 1.3 million gross square feet building inclusive of 3 basement levels of underground car park, with a net lettable area of 700,000 square feet. This 13-storey retail mall is heralded as the most successful department store in Malaysia, based on returns per square foot, with a wide variety of goods and services under one roof.
With the invaluable experience gained over the years, Datuk Andrew Lim earned a Master’s Degree in Business Administration (Retail) at The Open University of Malaysia in 2014, in order to lead his TeamSOGO and to also better equip himself with the necessary knowledge and skills to stay relevant in the retailing business. In growing and sustaining KL SOGO’s business, Datuk Andrew Lim strongly believes that ‘people management’ is the absolute key. He practices what he calls ‘incentive-based management’. This means clearly spelling out the incentives and happily giving it out to his fellow TeamSOGO colleagues when they actually perform and achieve their KPI targets.
Datuk Andrew Lim is now the Group Deputy Chairman of SOGO Malaysia’s group of companies, and SOGO Malaysia is soon spreading its wings to the south, offering Johoreans and shoppers from neighbouring states there, the opportunity to shop at SOGO Malaysia’s first additional outlet, to be known as JB SOGO. Strategically located inside Paradigm Mall Johor Bahru, a prestigious retail destination, the new store also promises a wide selection of quality goods and services at competitive prices.
Today, Datuk Andrew Lim is also the Group Chairman of the Gama Group of Companies, President of the Penang Judo Association, Life member of PEMADAM, a Trustee of the Old Frees’ Association of Kuala Lumpur & Selangor, Trustee of Penang Free School Scouts’ Trust Fund, Legal Advisor to Bukit Glugor Residents’ Association and Past President of the Rotary Club of Georgetown, Penang. In all respects, Datuk Andrew Lim and his fellow colleagues in TeamSOGO, lives and breathes their present motto ‘We serve you better!’.
