“In every crisis, not only be aware of the danger but also recognize the opportunity.” This is one of the key factors that motivates Dato’ Azemi bin Abu Bakar to become a successful entrepreneur.
Dato’ Azemi Bin Abu Bakar was born on August 4, 1963 in Ayer Hitam, Kedah. This business leader has 7 siblings and he is the third child. His family was modest but stable and his parent was a farmer. Was educated at Kedah (Primary and secondary school). Married to Datin Rosilah Wahab, Dato’ Azemi Abu Bakar holds a B. Sc. (Ecology) (Hons) University Of Malaya on 1988.
As a young man, Dato’ Azemi received a lot of encouragement from his parents and was highly motivated by his idol, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad (former Prime Minister of Malaysia) who encouraged indigenous youths to venture into business. In this early career, Dato’ Azemi worked as a Research Assistant in Universiti Malaya, a tutor in the Zoology Department at Universiti Malaya, an enforcement officer for the Department of Environment (DOE) and a Manager of Contraction Company to PIMMAG (Oil spill response). His broad experience on environmental work added significant value to the projects and provided a broad spectrum of understanding on the multi-disciplinary nature of environmental related issues.
Golden Ecosystem Sdn. Bhd. (GESB) was established in December 2000. GESB started their operations with only a small capital base and a few staff with no equipment and handling only minor projects. Dato’ Azemi soon found that inventing ideas were easy but it was difficult to implement these ideas without proper dedication and motivation. He faced various challenges and constraints in setting up GESB. But he worked around these and gradually added more projects to the portfolio and increasing the number of staff and equipment.
Having taken GESB to a firmer footing, the Company was able to weather the recent economy downturn brought by the declining number oil and gas projects. The company has also added blue chips oil and gas companies such as PETRONAS, KPOC, TALISMAN, Murphy Oil and SapuraKencana as its clients. Despite the impact on the company’s profits as a result of the adverse economic conditions, GESB took care of the workers’ welfare by not reducing their salary. Quoting from Doug Conant, CEO of Campbell Soup, “To win the marketplace you must win in the workplace”, Dato’ Azemi believes that the most valuable asset is his staff. Starting with only two staff running the company Dato Azemi now has 53 staff helping him.
Dato’ Azemi always emphasized that success is not determined by others, but by ourselves. He is a living example as his hard work had taken GESB to become one of the leading environmental consultant company in Malaysia with offices in Penang, Pengerang, Johor and Sabah with logistic facilities at Labuan and Miri. From a small company, now GESB has the resources, ability and expertise in environmental consultancy, and best practices to assists and support clients from initial conception to successful completion of projects.
As an Environmental Consultant, Dato’ Azemi is a registered EIA Consultant with the DOE, registered with the International Register of Certificates Auditors (IRCA), green card holder with CIDB Malaysia, a member of Malaysia Oil and Gas Society and a member of Malaysia Oil and Gas Services Council (MOGSC). He has attended more than 50 training programmes and seminars organized by ENSEARCH, EIMAS, Jabatan Alam Sekitar and others.
As the Managing Director, Dato’ Azemi is accountable for the overall performance of the company, management of the day-to-day operations of the company as well as motivate, develop and lead members of the Management Team. As a leader of the Management Team, he was responsible for establishing and developing the company’s culture and values and to ensure that they fit into the company’s key strategies. He also has to manage resources efficiently and effectively to achieve the company’s objectives. His responsibilities also include developing and implementing high-level strategies, making major corporate decisions, managing the overall operation and resources and acting as the main point of communication between the board of directors and the corporate operations.
Dato’ Azemi believes that if you want to achieve something, you need to work for it. Quoting from his idol, Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar Al-Bukhary, “in order to gain a wealth for now and here after, never forget our own roots and keep on helping those who need help. Wealth is not meant for us alone, but to be shared”, Dato’ Azemi is active in Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSR). He also acts as share partners with DOE Johor for any environmental program organized by DOE Johor. He sponsored the “Rakan Kerjasama Strategik Di Dalam Program Transformasi Penanaman Pokok Di Cameron Highlands Di Bawah Kementerian Sumber Asli Dan Alam Sekitar” and contributed financially to the Akademi Tahfiz Darul Abrar at Jalan Kelang Lama, Selangor, Maahad Tahfiz Bukit Gadong, Sekolah Kebangsaan Bandar Tasik Selatan, Bandar Tasik Selatan, Kuala Lumpur, the Majlis Tilawah Al-Quran Zon Pudu, the Persatuan Bekas Polis Malaysia, events organized by CUEPAC and to the Department of Environment (DOE) Kelantan for education programmes.
