Subscribing to the life philosophy of doing the biggest thing possible in life, Dato’ Ir. Haji Azman Shahidin, President and CEO of Technology Park Malaysia Corporation Sdn Bhd (TPM) believes that one has to stay in top condition at all times.
The inspiring quote of philosopher, Dr Orison Swett Marden: “It is every one’s sacred duty to keep himself in a condition to do the biggest thing possible to him” had inspired Dato’ Azman to etch his name as an industry captain in managing and helming Malaysia’s leading technology park since 2006.
An engineer by profession, Azman has always adopted the most positive leadership traits required of him not only in helming TPM but also ensured that universal values are adopted and adapted to his family life.
He says that in order for anyone to bring out the best that is within us and achieve the object of our heart’s desire, it is necessary that we be good to ourselves, to stay in top condition at all times.
“Every one of us has our own strengths. It is important to understand the purpose of life. If our mind is able to conceive an idea, it can be achieved. Therefore, we must apply all the positive attributes, knowledge and experience to ensure that we can successfully achieve the end results. However, we must understand our own intrinsic behaviourial aspects to make things happen in a positive manner,” adds Azman philosophically.
An avid golfer, Azman is happily married with seven children, whose ages range from 14 to 21 years old.
He also reasoned that golf is a thinking game and it has several attributes could be incorporated into managing an organization. For example, in hitting the ball, one has to be positive and think
critically on the best method to hit the long distance. It also teaches one to have patience and perseverance. These are positive attributes that can be inculcated into the operational system of any organization to achieve a common objective and its corporate mission.
The success of TPM today is largely attributable to the knowledge, expertise and inspiring leadership qualities of its mastermind, Dato’ Ir Haji Mohd Azman Shahidin.
Since helming TPM as its President and Chief Executive Officer in November 2006, Azman has taken the organization to greater heights each year with forceful energy and determination to become the leading technology park not only in Malaysia, but also as among the leaders in the Asia-Pacific region.
As a disciplined and visionary leader, he has been instrumental in transforming TPM as the leading technopreneur development centre in tandem with the evolution of market demand and technology development.
Today, TPM is the preferred technology park with a fully integrated and comprehensive innovation ecosystem. It is the only 4th generation technology park in Malaysia with the inclusion of specialized advisory in a comprehensive and integrated technopreneurship development programme.
Moving forward, TPM has negotiated and is finalizing collaboration agreements with nine other international incubation centres in Indonesia, India, Hong Kong, Vietnam, The Philippines, Thailand and Russia. Among them are Bandung Digital Valley, PSG Step India, Hong Kong Science & Technology Park, Cyberport Hong Kong, Topica Group Vietnam, Ayala Technology Business Incubator Philippines, Thailand Science Park and Russia Novosibirsk University.

The principal objective of the collaboration with the international incubator centres, says Azman, is to facilitate co-incubation initiatives between TPM and their overseas counterparts. It is also to assist Malaysian incubatees and their overseas peers to explore business and investment opportunities and to forge smart partnerships for their products and services.
Other initiatives undertaken by TPM included the upgrading of its Halal Science Laboratory in Kuala Lumpur with the latest technologies for halal testing and analysis according to international standards. It is the only halal science laboratory that is recognized by JAKIM.
Another notable initiative adopted recently is the successful embracement of change management by adapting to the new TEMS which provides greater detailed and faster real-time reporting of the entire organizational operations from finance, human resources, marketing to customer services.
Steely determination, persistence and the hunger for success speak volumes of Dato’ Hj. Azman’s leadership capability. These traits have contributed significantly to TPM’s excellence and global recognition.
Noted for his strict discipline and the adoption of best international management and business practices, he encourages the participation of his staff at all levels to uncover new talents. With his open management style and an eagle-eye for details, he has successfully implemented strategic pillars that have become the foundation of TPM’s success.
Among the notable management policies and strategies are the periodical review of its organizational structure; inculcating the culture of high performance and change management; effective stakeholder management; employee well-being and engagement; good corporate governance and transparency; and adapting to latest industry practices.
Under his stewardship, TPM has been admitted as a member of various local and international incubators association and bodies such as the International Association of Science Park (IASP), Asian Association of Business Park (AABI), National Incubator Network Association (NINA), Asia Pasific Incubation Network (APIN) and Association of University Research Park (AURP).
It has culminated to TPM’s success in winning prestigious international and local awards and accolades including the Technology Asian Business Review Award for Excellence in Government Services – Technology Incubation; The BrandLaureate Awards; Best Incubator Award from the National Incubator Network Association (NINA) and Malaysian Venture Capital and Private Equity Association Recognition Award for Government- Linked Organisation that has supported and contributed towards the venture capital and private equity industry in Malaysia, among many others.
He is a member of the Malaysian Board of Engineers, Malaysia Institution of Engineers and the National Business Incubation Association (NBIA) based in USA. His business and professional management skills were further amplified as he enrolled and successfully completed the Harvard Business School Premier Business Management Program.
With more than 25 years of professional experience in handling various multi-billion Ringgit projects in infrastructure and urban development, property development and investment, technology management, vendor development programmes and projects in the oil and gas industry, Azman has developed a strong technical, business and commercial acumen and has proven to be the main thrust driving the growth of TPM’s success.
