Azmi Abdul Aziz has over 25 years of experience in the public and private sectors in the public transport industry. Azmi has immense and outstanding intellect in public transport with his contribution to the public transportation sector that encompasses policies and operations of public transport systems and services. Azmi Abdul Aziz graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Education Technology (Mechanical Engineering) from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Johor. He also has an Educational Technology Certificate (Computer) from Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang. He had undergone various training such as Instructor Training for Management Principles (Rail Systems), Project Management & Safety Management at Vancouver Canada, building up his expertise for what was to come.
Following on under Projek Usahasama Transit Ringan Automatik Sdn Bhd (PUTRA LRT) from 1996 to August 2002, Azmi played a pivotal role for the company, as he was responsible for many invaluable contributions such as the establishment of the Operations & Maintenance Organization to operate and maintain the LRT system 2. He was responsible for the formulation of the O&M Policies & Procedures, Implementing Overseas Training and Technology Transfer Programs, Finalization of the Operations, Maintenance, Staffing and Training Plans and also the Certification of Qualified Staff and Contractors to perform work at the LRT system.
Azmi was also the one responsible to see through the issuance of the Railway License by the Department of Railway. Apart from setting up the Training Department and Facilities, Formulation and Implementation of various Company Programs and Training Activities, Azmi was also involved in other areas such as in the Testing and Commissioning of Related Sub Systems for the LRT, Preparation of Project Proposals to the Government for the Local Manufacture of Additional Trains for LRT System 2, just to name a few.
Moving on from PUTRA LRT, Azmi was Chief Operating Officer of KLRT Consultancy & Eng. Services (wholly owned subsidiary of SPNB), adding up to 11 years of working experience in the rail industry.
From June 2006 to December 2008, Azmi then held the position of General Manager, Rail Operations at RapidKL Sdn Bhd. With 750 employees under his supervision, Azmi was responsible for managing and administering divisional activities and core businesses which primarily were geared towards ensuring for the safe operations of 250 rail coaches on an approximate 400,000 trips and transporting over 100 million passengers both annually. With a record of zero major accidents during his two-year tenure, it was a great success for Azmi. As the General Manager of Rail Operations, he was also responsible in making sure that the standards of service through Service Reliability KPI of 99% and Service Punctuality KPI of less than five minutes per day were both achieved. At RapidKL, Azmi was managing the core business of the company which contributed to an annual revenue of approximately RM180 million.
Azmi then went on to hold the position of Chief Operating Officer of SCOMI Engineering Berhad between January 2009 to June 2010. Apart from ensuring sound operating expenses, cost and margin control, his responsibilities extend to ensuring successful implementation of company projects and business objectives for
Scomi’s rail division products and services. Here, he had also served as a Project Director for India’s first Monorail project in Mumbai. The prospective rail related projects for Malaysia, Middle East, Brazil and India was also his responsibility as he coordinated tender preparation works. Among the minor responsibilities was also overseeing the performance of rail manufacturing facility and systems engineering group.
He then served as Chief Development Officer at Suruhanjaya Pengangkutan Awam Darat (S.P.A.D.) for more than three and a half years. At SPAD, he formulated the National Public Transport Masterplan, the development and setting up of Transport Policies, played a pivotal role in planning and supervising the KVMRT Line 1 (Sungai Buloh-Kajang) and KVMRT Line 2 (Sungai Buloh- Serdang-Putrajaya) and also closely worked on the formulation for the High Speed Rail project from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore. As the CDO of S.P.A.D., Azmi played an essential role in the successful planning andimplementation of the land public transport transformative initiatives and reforms. The Klang Valley Sungai Buloh-Kajang MRT is an example of a project that he helped planned and now closely supervise. Aside from the MRT 1 and 2, Azmi is also responsible for the High Speed KL-Singapore rail project, another ‘high impact’ project under the Economic Transformation Program and the Rail Transit System – a cross- border link between Malaysia and Singapore that has the potential to boost growth for both countries.
Azmi was appointed as Group Managing Director of Prasarana Malaysia Berhad on January 1, 2015. As Group Managing Director of Prasarana Malaysia Berhad, Azmi’s vision is to bring the group to new heights and transform the country’s public transport services with Prasarana’s primary role as an integrated public transport provider for intra-city rail and bus services remaining as its driving mission.
