These are the words that has become Adnan B. Md Noh’s trademark – whenever he is meeting his team leaders in the Utas Maju organization. This line is proves his prominence in the market – as no one dares to ‘create story’ in front of him. Adnan started his career as a humble sales executive during mid 90s, and he climbed the hierarchy until he became the leader in his former organization. Furthermore, he started to build the niche strength by venturing into clinical diagnostics business – and formed Utas Maju. During the time, and even now, there are not many Bumiputera players in local IVD market. Mentored by his former CEO in Biomedia Holdings, he drives through the success runway and is proud to be selected with the Most Promising Entrepreneurship Award 2014, Super Health Brand 2014, Top 100 SMEs 2012, a TERAS company by TERAJU and more out of high performance with current strategic partners.
A principle-centered person, his character evolves and influences much of the company growth. When the company started in 2003, it employed 6 persons and recorded the first revenue just above RM3 million. Over 10 years, the company consistently posted positive growth with revenue in 2014 reaching RM26.5 million with 50 staffs. Such growth has been driven by a strong core values – Customer Focus, Vibrancy, Learning, Partnership, Leadership and Integrity – which began with the person and now embedded across the organization.
Problem is opportunity. Problem is the ‘business’.
This is how Adnan sees things. Nobody should run from issues, but face it. He always challenges himself – and ‘fortunately’ all the staff – in solving any customer problem by the means of helping them. Sincerity is key. Self-richness was never the goal but whenever profit is healthy, he is willing to share more by distributing in the forms of higher bonuses, trips etc. He holds the famous principle of giving – the more you give, the more you get back.
Being FOCUSED and HANDS-ON are other qualities that are expressed on daily basis. Despite seeing the opportunity to diversify, he believes in untapped segments within the healthcare industry. New technology in the medical field has always sparked excitement within him – but he will never sacrifice the quality for money. He keeps emphasizing to each of the team members to ensure to always do the right thing at the first time. Effectiveness and efficiency will be the result in required productivity.

The more you give, the more you get back

For the past 5 years and moving forward, the IVD, particularly the pathology segment, is driven by the system automation. He proves his ability by successfully winning the first Beckman Coulter Power Processor Lab Automation System in Hospital Raja Perempuan Zainab II, Kota Bharu in late 2012. The position of Managing Director has never stopped him from working even at the bottom level of execution to set the WINNING benchmark to the team. Until now, the company is proud to be one of the few effective lab automation systems available in the market – resulting in higher revenue gain from year to year.
“I always want to see more of you (the people in the organization) to become more successful, even to a better stage than what I am now,” Adnan shares. “I want to make sure that each person manages to have a well and balanced living. Good career, best family. I am satisfied to bring the warehouse people (non-executive, low rank staff) on overseas trip. I don’t mind spending for them. They give their commitment, I give mine.”
He does not solely strive for commercial goals. The commercial becomes the tool that is used to help others achieve their personal goal. The alignment between company goals and personal goals enables current success and believed to be the element to sustain it. This ‘partnership’ value is practiced from the smallest scale to the larger one. It can also be seen from the long-time relation with all the major suppliers e.g. Beckman Coulter, Sebia, Techno Medica and others of Utas Maju.
Moving forward, Adnan aims to expand the business and organization – in order for him to provide adequate growth room to all of the people. The only pre-requisites are the positive mindset and commitment to grow. Because Utas Maju is just a name, what builds the organization is it PEOPLE.
