As a third generation entrepreneur in Healthcare, Malvinder incubated and established Fortis Healthcare Limited (Fortis) and SRL, in the late 1990’s. Since then, he has led from the front growing and building both into leading healthcare delivery companies in their respective areas, of Hospitals and Diagnostics. He has been bold and audacious in driving scale and creating a robust pan India presence through a mix of organic and inorganic measures.
As Executive Chairman, Fortis Healthcare Limited, he has strengthened the fabric of the organization, and enabled it to move ahead in realizing its purpose of expanding access to high quality healthcare at Indian price points. He remains a strong believer in the India growth story and under his leadership both Fortis and SRL are committed to transforming the Indian healthcare landscape by taking the next leap in clinical excellence and patient centric care.
Previously, Malvinder was Chairman, MD and CEO of Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd; Chairman of the Board of Religare Enterprises and Chairman of the Board of Parkway Holdings. He has always taken strategic business decisions in the best interests of the companies he has led. These have helped to unlock significant value in Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd, Parkway Holdings and Fortis’s International assets, emphatically demonstrating his ability to steer his companies, keeping in mind the vision for the business and its shareholders.
Malvinder has a strong personal belief in the social responsibility of individuals and corporates. With a focus on affordability and accessibility to life saving medicines in emerging and under developed countries; he channelled resources towards innovation, to reduce the cost of ARV medication and for the development of a new low cost synthetic anti-malarial drug. He keenly supports initiatives to provide curative and preventive healthcare to the economically under privileged in India through the Fortis Charitable Foundation (FCF).
Malvinder is a member of the Board of Visitors at the Fuqua School of Business (Duke University, USA) and is on the Board of the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER). He is the co-chair of the India-Malaysia CEO Forum and was a member of the first batch of the Young Global Leaders initiative of the World Economic Forum.
Malvinder graduated in Economics Honours from the prestigious St Stephens College, Delhi University and went on to earn his MBA from the renowned Fuqua School of Business, Duke University, USA.
An out of the box thinker and innovator, Malvinder was instrumental in the creation and listing of the Religare Health Trust (RHT) on the Singapore Stock Exchange(SGX). With this vehicle, he created a perpetual source of funding for the business and helped Fortis to transition to an asset light business model– a pioneering effort in India’s healthcare sector, which is now being emulated by others.
