Vipul’s achievements as an entrepreneur include creating a leading software product company – Accelya Kale Solutions Limited – as well as his passionate contribution to the social sector. After graduating from two of India’s premier institutes (B.Tech from IIT, Kanpur and an MBA from IIM. Ahmedabad), Vipul started his career with Tata Group and led the set-up of the first online Hotel Management system in India at the Taj Palace Hotel.
He left his corporate career in 1986 to co-found Kale Consultants Private Limited (Kale). The company started as a typical start-up, with a one-room office and 8 employees, with a dream to build a global product company and be a leader in its chosen industry segments. This was a challenging path to take, since there were no precedents of successful Indian software product companies. The initial years were full of struggle because the domestic market in India was small with low price points and inadequate maturity in the product market. After an eventful journey the company had a very successful IPO in 1999 and decided to focus on the airline industry. Using the funds from the IPO, Kale Consultants established a global presence and also did successful acquisitions to grow the business and customer base.
By 2010, Kale Consultants was a recognized brand in the industry serving over 100 global airline customers. Vipul realized that the right strategic partnership would help the company progress to the next level. Kale Consultants strategically merged with Accelya Group in 2010. Vipul continues his role as CEO and MD of the Indian entity while also playing a strategic role in the global group. Vipul has been an integral part of the team that charted the joint vision for Accelya Group: “To be the market leader of integrated suite of financial and business intelligence solutions to airlines.”
Accelya Kale provides revenue accounting, revenue assurance and cost management platforms and services to the global airline industry. These solutions help the airline to protect their cash flows, reduce revenue leakages and get accurate and timely accounting. Traditionally these platforms were offered on an upfront license model. In 2010 Vipul brought a paradigm shift in the industry by offering all the solutions on SaaS model with option of outsourced services on top of the SaaS platform. This enabled airlines to avoid huge upfront capital expenditure and also reduce risk by paying on a per-transaction basis.
This model was a “first” for the airline industry and has since become a widely accepted model preferred by many airlines. Amongst Accelya Kale customers are very prestigious names like American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta, Etihad Airways, Air India, Turkish Airlines, Qantas, Japan Airlines, LAN etc. Today Accelya Kale is recognized as a global leader and an innovator in this space. Accelya Kale won the NASSCOM IT Innovation Award for pioneering the platform based BPO model.
Since 2010 Accelya Kale has grown revenues by 2 times, profit by 3 times and the market capitalization by 11 times and is widely recognized as a global leader serving the airline industry. Its revenue for Financial Year 2014 was USD 52 million, net profit after tax of USD 14 million and market capitalization of USD 183 million (as of March 31, 2014). The company has been selected twice in Forbes Asia’s 200 List of ‘Best Under a Billion’ in 2011 and 2013. Accelya Kale has been voted as ‘IT Company of the Year 2014’ by Air Transport News and ‘Information Technology for the Air Cargo Industry 2014’ by ACW World Air Cargo.
Vipul is also a social entrepreneur having started Catalysts for Social Action (CSA) in 2002, a Not-For-Profit organization dedicated to the cause of child welfare and rehabilitation. According to unofficial sources, India has over 2 crore orphan children and yet there are less than 7,000 adoptions taking place. CSA works as a “catalyst” to promote and facilitate adoptions and works towards transforming the lives of orphans by enabling them to get an education, eat a nutritious meal and to be healthy & happy.
CSA works with existing rural institutions to facilitate the quality, speed and number of adoptions in India. They have successfully facilitated over 200 direct adoptions and 600 indirect adoptions, so far. In the area of enabling holistic care of children they support a number of childcare organizations in the areas of nutrition, hygiene, & health, education & vocational skills and recreation activities. CSA has made and continues to make a valuable difference to 2800+ children across 4 Indian states. Vipul Jain is also a member of Board of Directors of The Fight Hunger Foundation (FHF). FHF is the Indian affiliate of ACTION CONTRE LA FAIM (Action against Hunger) a well-known International NGO based in France. The vision of FHF is to work towards elimination of malnutrition in India.
