The last 25 years in Mr Ratish Tagde’s career have been nothing short of an extraordinary journey. From revenues to ragas, from balance- sheets to boundary-erasing music, from corporate governance to creating a global ecosystem for Indian music, Ratish has made a most unusual crossover. But then, he is a man known for crossovers (he is one of the world’s best known fusion musicians) and combinations.
Ratish combines the finest professional management skills with a passion for music and a commitment to the cause of Indian music and its practitioners. This rare combination of musical prowess, business management skills and a vision for the future of Indian music did not evolve overnight. It began at the very tender age of 9 years.
As a young boy Ratish would spend hours observing and learning the tabla from his father Shri S V Tagde, a highly respected music teacher of his time. In his teen years however, the boy expressed a strong desire to learn the violin. And so, the violin it was that became an inseparable part of Ratish’s persona. The violin virtually dictated the course of his life and how his personality developed over the years.
However, this over-riding passion never caused him to compromise on education. On the contrary, it intensified his passion to study harder and score higher in academics than the average youngster. Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com.) was followed by a degree in law – LL.B. (Hons.), followed by becoming Member of the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (FCS). Alongside these academic pursuits and accomplishments, he had also been gaining a musical education, earning himself a triple M.A.
After acquiring a Bachelor of Music (B.Mus.) in Tabla from Khairagharha Sangeet Vishvavidhyalay (Asia’s largest Indian music university), he completed a 3-year degree course in Indian classical Music earning himself the ‘Sangeet Vid’ title and followed it up with a 2-year post-graduate ‘Sangeet Kovid’ in Violin. He also succeeded in ‘Sangeet Praveen’ his second post-graduate course at India’s oldest and most respected institution Prayag Sangeet Sameetee, Allahabad. This was followed with his third Masters degree, specializing in Violin, from Devi Ahilya Vishvavidyalaya, Indore. This last accomplishment came with even greater fanfare: 1st position in the merit list and a Gold Medal!
His served the corporate world as Company Secretary for over a quarter century, but eventually his passion for music overtook all other considerations. In fact, his career reached the high point of personal fulfillment with distinctive endeavors dedicated solely to Indian classical genres.
