Mr Francis Lau Choo Yew started his entrepreneurship as the Founder and Managing Director of LCY Development Sdn Bhd, a Company incorporated in Negara Brunei Darussalam in 1997. The Company started with a humble beginning with a small team of five employees. Since its incorporation, the Company has expanded rapidly to become an active and reputable contractor specialized in building and civil engineering projects. The company has completed over 80 projects in the last 15 years.
Francis is also the Co-Founder and Director of Imperco Sdn Bhd in the State of Sarawak, Malaysia with its office in Kuching where the Company has established itself as a leading property development company in the State of Sarawak since 2002. He is the founder of its subsidiary company, LCY Development (M) Sdn Bhd incorporated early 2008 as a property development company with its operations in the State of Sabah.
With the success of LCY Development Sdn Bhd and subsidiary company, LCY Development (M) Sdn Bhd and the experience from incorporating of Imperco Sdn Bhd, Mr Francis Lau has co-founded Gamawan Sdn Bhd and Mega Project Development Sdn Bhd in 2013 and 2014 respectively, with their offices in Miri, Sarawak, specialized in housing development and land investment.
Besides this, Francis also ventured into Australia with the start of LCY Development Pty Ltd in 2010 and he is also a co-founder and Managing Partner of L&L Group of Companies, involving mainly in the property development business and investment in land and property, with their offices in Melbourne.
In 2012, Mr Francis Lau expanded his interest into Singapore where he became a partner of a newly formed investment company, namely LCT Investment Holdings Pte Ltd with plans for immediate joint venture business in Myanmar.
On 9 February 2015, Francis Lau was appointed Director of Progen Holdings Limited, a Public Listed Company in Singapore, specialized in Mechanical & Electrical works.
A Bruneian Permanent Resident, Francis graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Building with Honours at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia in 1984. He served as a Quantity Surveyor with the Public Works Department, Negara Brunei Darussalam in 1985 and worked for 8 years before joining private practice. He is now a Chartered Surveyor, Chartered Builder and registered Quantity Surveyor with professional institutions of the United Kingdom, Australia, Malaysia and Negara Brunei Darussalam.
Francis Lau was awarded the Outstanding Entrepreneurship Award for the Asia Pacific Entrepreneurship Awards (APEA) in 2008, 2010 & 2012 for the Negara Brunei Darussalam region. In 2014, he was once again awarded the Outstanding Entrepreneurship Award for Asia Pacific Entrepreneurship Awards (APEA) BIMP-EAGA.
There are few factors that inspired Francis to become an entrepreneur. First of all, it is the moral obligation to give contribution towards the society. The spirit of entrepreneurship is also propelled and enhanced by public recognition and appreciation towards his contribution as an entrepreneur.
Stories from the successful entrepreneurs and business associates have also inspired Francis besides his personal interests in business especially in construction industry. He is also inspired by the parental guidance during childhood and the academic training which in turns has provided him with more knowledge in the pursuit for success in his undertakings.
LCY Development Sdn Bhd retains and improves its competitiveness in Brunei with its sufficient and continuous supply of manpower and the substantial amount of machineries and equipment that are owned by the company itself, in ensuring there is always enough work-force and machinery to carry out the works of all the projects on-hand.
Francis believes that in order to sustain in the market, it is important to ensure value for money and satisfaction of the customers or clients by providing good service and understand their needs and wants. This is the reason as a developer, Francis Lau always ensures that his companies deliver high and accepted
quality product and complete the projects within the given time frame as requested by customers and clients.
Francis lives with his principle, “SUCCESS is a journey, not a destination. If you treat success like a destination, which you will eventually reach, you will stop growing”. He measures success by achievements and evaluates achievements from the hours of work spent. Francis strongly believes that there is no secret to success, except hard work and having the heart to work. He adds on that dedication to works is important; there is no success in the long term if employees do not have the heart to work, no matter how good they are.
The long-term visions of Francis Lau is to expand his business interests into ASEAN region mainly in Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore and Myanmar and also the Asia-Pacific Rim in Australia and New Zealand in the field of property development and construction, where he has started in Malaysia, Singapore, Myanmar and Australia.
