For over 30 years, Dan Abando has steered companies and organizations towards growth, expansion and business success. Equally notable is his passion for nation-building and making a difference by sharing his vast experience as an engineer and entrepreneur in several professional organizations.
From a Project Director in Ayala Land in 1995, he rose through the ranks by exhibiting excellent leadership, marketing, business development and entrepreneurial expertise. These traits opened up opportunities for him to become President of several of Ayala Land’s biggest and most renowned companies in various occasions.
In 2006, he was appointed as President of Community Innovations, Inc., where he successfully led the organization to one of its most important milestones, the transition to a new brand name—Alveo Land Corp., a move that successfully brought the company’s value proposition closer to its intended target market. Dan also led the development and roll-out of the Project Enterprise Team (PET) concept which until now is being implemented to help promote collaboration, teamwork, and a strong sense of commitment and shared accountability among Alveo Land’s Business Development team members. He continued to lead this company towards new levels of organizational productivity and sales performance as well as expansion in market share until 2010. Dan was also responsible for closing vital land deals which included the Sta. Ana Race Track Property, now The Circuit Makati, Kasa Luntian Project in Tagaytay, Ametta Project in Pasig, Lerato Project in Makati, and Sedina Park in Cebu, among others. Concurrent with his leadership role in Alveo Land, in 2009, he was appointed as Head of Construction Management of Ayala Land.
In November 2010, he became President and CEO of Makati Development Corporation (MDC), where he continues to lead the growth and expansion of the wholly-owned construction company of real estate giant Ayala Land Inc. and the biggest construction company in the Philippines. In addition to this executive role, he is also the Chairman of the Board of MDC BuildPlus, Inc., MDC Equipment Solutions, Inc., and MDC ConQrete Inc., MDC subsidiaries he formed over the course of 5 years to champion operational efficiency and agility, and business expansion.
In September 2016, Dan created a joint venture company with world-renowned French construction conglomerate Bouygues Batiment International to build one of Ayala Land’s flagship projects: The soon-to-rise Ayala Triangle Garden Tower in the middle of the Makati Business District.
Currently, Dan sits as a member of the Management Committee, Investment Committee and Corporate Working Group of Ayala Land and is also the current Chairman of its Technical Council. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of Alveo Land Corporation, Avida Land Corporation, Ayala Property Management Corporation, Serendra Inc., Anvaya Golf and Country Club, Inc., and the JV company with Bouygues Travaux Publis for the LRT Line 1 Extension Project.
He has made it his personal mission to be heavily involved in professional organizations and advance the cause he mutually shares with them. In 2014, Dan won the Professional Degree Award in Civil Engineering by the University of the Philippines Alumni Engineers (UPAE) for outstanding performance as a Civil Engineer. The following year, he became a member of the UPAE’s Board of Trustees.
He has also been a member of the Board of Trustees of the Philippine Constructors Association (PCA) and its subsidiaries since 2014 and is currently its Chairman and President.
Dan is primarily responsible for the transformation of MDC into a world class full-line Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Construction Management (EPC/CM) company through the development of strategic thrusts focusing on growth, margin improvement, capital efficiency and organizational development, and the enhancement of business processes, human capital, manufacturing plants and relationships with partners.
Under Dan’s leadership, MDC was able to retain its 3 world-class Certifications—ISO 9001:2008 (Quality Management Systems), OHSAS 18001:2007 (Occupational Health & Safety Management Systems) and ISO 14001:2004 (Environmental Management Systems). The same certifications have eventually been awarded to MDC’s subsidiaries (MDC BuildPlus Inc., MDC ConQrete, Inc., and MDC Equipment Solutions Inc.).
In 2015, driven by the need to further enhance the competencies and skills of its skilled workforce, Dan pushed for the establishment of 6 TESDA Technical Training Centers which has now produced over 11,000 graduates (construction workers) from various courses related to construction (e.g., carpentry, masonry, welding, etc..,). Currently, MDC has 9 TESDA-accredited Training and Assessment centers located in major Construction Operations Centers.
Having strong business sense and the drive to optimize resources, Dan led the spin-off of construction equipment maintenance and operations into MDC Equipment Solutions, Inc. (MEQ), Ready-Mixed Concrete batching plant operations into MDC ConQrete, Inc. (MCI), and the establishment of MDC BuildPlus Inc., the construction subsidiary catering to economic residential products.
The strategies that were developed included the identification of four (4) key enablers: People,Plant,Process,Partners.
While being strategic as expected from his position, he makes it a point to visit projects nationwide to coach and mentor his leaders at the project operations level and understand the difficulties experienced on the ground. And while he understands that strategies are key to the company’s journey, specific nuances in operating in different regions of the country will still have to be dealt with accordingly.
Dan is a versatile entrepreneur. He has become a financial expert for top-line and bottom-line targets and measures on how to optimize profit and tapering costs without compromising quality and the welfare of employees. Moreover, He provides directions on procurement, design, construction operations, new construction technologies, and skills development, through collaboration and inputs from the various ranks of the organization.
Dan champions teamwork at every level of the organization as he believes that the successful delivery of a project or corporate target cannot be done by any one single person but through the collaboration of highly engaged, motivated and competent teams. He demands the best from people but also puts in place programs to equip them in their roles and career advancement. He is tough but fair.
Dan has set the vision of MDC to be a world class builder of choice and continuously leads the company towards this goal as it maximizes the opportunities of a booming construction industry both here and across Southeast Asia. Through his leadership team, Dan continues to develop strategies and programs to build MDC’s capabilities through modernization, technology and development of skills and competencies.
Dan envisions MDC to be a leading nation-builder, transforming vast tracts of land into booming and bustling residential, recreational, business and industrial centers that fuel economic growth and development that ultimately uplift the lives of millions of Filipinos.
